When I was a kid, there weren't any DVD players to pass the time on long road trips. I also didn't have a fancy schmancy iPod, mp3 player, or cell phone. All I had was my brother. We would pass the time with fun car games. We had our favorites...and we loved playing them. Sometimes we took them way too seriously, but most of the time we had lots of fun.
As I've gotten older, I've added another game to my repertoire. Since living in British Columbia, I have been surrounded with a melting pot of various ethnic groups. I've noticed that certain areas have lots of one group...and very little of any other groups. One day, while driving around with my son, he noticed how there were very few Caucasian people around. I told him I wasn't surprised because we were in China Town at the time and there was mostly Asian people living in this area. He further stated that he hadn't seen a "white person" since we entered the area and joked about us playing a new car game called "Count the White People". Now my son meant no disrespect to any other ethnic group, and I found his comment really funny. We did actually attempt to count as many white people was we could and I don't think we made it over 5 people in total.
So Pervia...What's your favorite car game?

My sisters and I would play "what would you do if...", or, if it was night, we would count how many cars we saw with only one headlight

LOL slug bug! My daughter and I used to play that one! There used to be a VW repair shop down the road, we would wear each other out when we went by there!
We also played a game where we would look for signs and find words alphabetically... Q, X and Z were always so hard to find!!

I was the only kid around, so I either played the A-Z game on my own, looked for 18 wheelers and pulled my hand like blowing a horn so the drivers would honk (drove my dad nutso) or read a book.

RJ: I remember this game well. We used to be so excited when we would see an east coast license plate like New York or New Jersey.
Dione: I used to play this game all the time! I remember being thrilled whenever a truck driver would toot his horn.

When I was a kid one was the grocery store game. Someone starts with...."my father runs a grocery store and in this grocery store he sells something that starts with..." and give the letter or letters for the item they have in mind. The questions can only be answered by a yes or no.
My late husband and I played this one time coming home from Michigan. His father ran a grocery store and sold something that started with PCC....I worked on that nearly all the way home and he finally had to tell me...Philadelphia Cream Cheese
Of course that game isn't easy to play today. Back in my day grocery stores were grocery stores and nuttin' more.
As an adult I've played license plate poker.

We taveled a lot.
Since both my parents could sing, Sing-alongs were always part of a long road trip. I learned songs to the 1920 while traveling across the country.
The there was the cow game, each team took a side. you got 1 ppoint for each cow you could count, 5 points for each horse and 25 points for a red barn. but if you passed a cemetery you had to bury all your cows.
Other than that I read a lot or we listened to the radio.
In the mobile camper. we'd put a towel on the back table and play card. They didn't slide around on the beach towel.
Thanks for the memory, that was fun.

If there's 5 people playing ya each take the next plate in front of you and when all 5 have your "hands" (plates) it's the best hand of the bunch wins. Then ya start over. Just like poker with cards except ya use license plates.

We took a few trips heading east on I 10 to ! 20...the most boring drive in the country. We would look look for car license plates of various states (trucks didn't count as they often had several back then). Who ever saw the plate got credit for it. We did the same with gas stations and cops. Obviously we were bored shitless and would do anything for amusement.

When someone is following too closely at night with their bright headlights on and blinding me, I think it's great fun to hit my brakes and watch them slam their's on and head for the ditch out of control

Thanks for playing with me Pervia.
I loved reading all your comments. I was surprised that there were so many different car games to play. I had no idea. I guess all you need is a little imagination...and a long car ride.

I play a game daily called freeway tetris. It's where you drive at a normal speed down a 4 lane highway while trying to think ahead and navigate your car through the open spaces between the other cars doing 50mph. Good fun! Maybe someday they'll figure out how the whole 'slow vehicles in the right lane' thing works.
