We all have them, memories of past winters where we had fun. Snow mobiles, skis, sleds, snow ball fights, snow angels and snow forts. I think back to when I was a kid...staying in the house in the winter was NOT an option, much to our mother's dismay. We would see all that fresh snow that fell, (don't know about the rest of you...but it seems that snow storms dumped more snow back then than they do today) and couldn't wait to get out there and play.

We would take our little pails out with us and use them to make snow bricks for our forts, and then have a battle royal snow ball fight. When we got bored with that, it was dragging the sleds out and dodging trees and creeks. Let me tell ya...landing in those creeks, COLD!!! Another thing Mom was never pleased with because instead of going home and getting out of those wet clothes, we just kept right on playing. And the field next to my parents house had a shallow dip in it where if it rained enough before a big freeze, we had a small ice skating pond. Mom liked the little pond, it meant we stayed closer to home. A group of us neighborhood kids did make the discovery that cops do not have a sense of humor when their cruisers get bombarded by snow balls. That really puts a monkey wrench in a day getting dragged home by a cop and having the cop tell your Mother about throwing snowballs at his car. Ya know...hearing "you are grounded" really sucked back then. For my sisters and I, that usually meant stuck in the house for 2 weeks. That was torture, knowing our friends were out there having fun while we were stuck inside. But we learned our lesson...next time we threw snow balls at the cop car....don't let the cop see where it came from. One thing a few of my friends did back then that I wouldn't do was what was called "bumper skiing". Usually when the roads had a good snow pack on them that was smooth and slick, wait for a car/truck/bus to go by, and grab the back bumper and "ski".

So....when did winter become such a pain?

So....when did winter become such a pain?

Having been raised on a farm, with animals having to be taken care of (damn things never wanted to just hibernate lol) winter was always a pain lol. As children, we got to enjoy a lot of the winter activities you mentioned, but it was always after the chores were done.

Baa Humbug!!! I hate winter. If we could have snow in July THAT would be different. Then we could have a snow orgy...I mean snow party.

Ah, memories of winter fun in California....playing touch football on wet grass and in short sleeves...in January! Or going miniture golfing on a foggy night in February. Or going to the drive-in on Christmas night and getting fogged out...

No bumper skiing or snowball memories for me....

Oh hell yeah to all the above.

...and standing on the frozen creek and throwing snowballs at the cars passin by and running under the bridge coming out the other side and throwing into their cars. Some people would get out of their cars to catch us and we would just run down the creek climb up the bank, jump some fences. This was our neighborhood, ain't no one gonna catch us here.

Winters...Sittin' at a beach or wharf Tiki Bar drinking lot's of cold rum drinks
Going to get back on your boat from the dock and forgetting that the tide fell while you were getting sloshed and that two steps down to the deck was now six..
Falling into the nice warm water, about 78-82f, looking for a line to pull your drunken self back on board..
Ah yes..I remember them fondly

I remember my two brothers and I getting in to our usual tricks. we virtually burried our neighbours car during the night in a huge pile of snow bringing the snow from the payment opposite. This bloke used to work nights and would be back only in the morning.....of course we got caught...some smart alec told on us and we had to clean up the mess. What a shame no phone cameras of digital cameras then.Brings back memories of fun in the snow we still talk about it.
