New week, new train-wreck.

"If you stare into the Abyss long enough the Abyss stares back at you."
Friedrich Nietzsche

Has anyone, besides me, ever thought that we stand perfectly balanced on the razor's edge between joy and sorrow?

Have you ever watched a wire walking team? How they stay perfectly balanced on the high wire.. arms stretched out.. holding one anothers hands to help maintain that balance? It's kind of like how we depend on one another for validation. We reach out for balance from another. In a perfect world, those that we reach out to would hold us up until we got our feet firmly planted and going the right direction. All too often, however, instead of finding a helping hand, we find empty space. Nothing on which to maintain a grasp, nothing solid or lasting.

Have you ever reached out and had someone grab hold? Had someone pull you back from falling? Had someone stand with you until you could stand on your own?

Those are the people who truly know how to love you.

I'm working on a multi-media piece this week.. illustrating that feeling of standing on the edge.. of having a puppeteer pull the strings.. and hoping, hoping for someone to take your hand. This is how it begins.

Dance with me, my sweets,
along the edge of the abyss.
But don't look down,
No, don't that'd be amiss.
They say that pride goeth
long before the fall.
well, I've got no pride
No, I've got no pride at all.
Won't you hold my hand,
as I gaily pirouette?
But don't let go,
Please don't ever let..

i really liked that. my mind has always tended to philosphical issues, and
poetic logic and poetic justice and poetic licence. have you ever been
on a teeter totter, and when you are way high on it at 4 yrs. old, your dad
who is at the bottom, sez, trust me, and then he jumps off, and you come
slamming down on your balls, and he has a good laugh at you? that happened
to me as a kid. for some reason i still trust him.

I have been holding myself up all alone for too long now......I'm about ready to let someone else for a change...

Great blog/poem....I've always loved that Nietzsche quote. If we focus on darkness and misery, we create our own misery, becoming miserable. We turn into a mirror-image reflection of that "abyss" we so much dread.

It's hard to avoid it sometimes. It's easy when you're down to focus on all of the bad things going on in your life. I've been there, and I'm sure everyone else has at some point in their lives too.

Hopefully everyone around them has a support system that they can hold onto when things aren't going well. For those who don't, I always think of a famous Vince Lombradi quote: "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get back up".

I found support at Hospice five years ago and have continued volunteering. I've met some amazing people including staff. I've found if you reach out and keep reaching out ..eventually you get the support you need.

Borty I couldn't agree more.

Life is a balancing act and sometimes the wire is slippery but that should not keep us from continuing the crossing.

The path to enlightenment is as sharp and narrow as a razor's edge.

I tend to pull back and deal with matters by myself. It is my problem, my business, no need to disrupt others' lives.

Maybe the abyss was staring into Nietzsche because

he was an atheist?
