"Reality" or "Show"?

Since the early nineties, reality t.v. has dominated the airwaves. Some of these shows are somewhat interesting, but most are just dumb. I mean, think about it. If someone stuck a camera in your face 24/7 for several weeks, would you act the same as you normally would? Human nature dictates that we can't. We have to ham it up for the camera, no matter stupid we look. Perhaps this is the appeal.

Then again, some people actually believe that the people on shows like "Big Brother" are just being themselves. Right...and professional wrestling isn't scripted.

I think I just figured out why they call it "Reality T.V.". It's a lot shorter than "Give a bunch of idiots 15 minutes of fame so we can boost our ratings t.v."

All I'm saying is this: If I want to see reality, I'll either watch the news or step outside my front door. If I want to see people making asses of themselves for cash and prizes, I'll watch "Survivor"...or the latest political campaign!

Opinions, anyone?

I find them to be mindless, lame and boring.

If you change your preferences to automatically approve all comments, you will get more people commenting because unless you do, many won't.

Of course they are. Mindless, lame and boring are apparently what gets ratings. The really good shows usually don't run as long. Go figure...

Reality TV works from a financial standpoint for the networks. Cost of production is probably minimal compared to developing plots and characters. The actors although scripted are probably non union, and would seem to be amateurs. Any nut would be glad to volunteer. Perhaps that is why its audience can relate. Fat people finally competing in their specialty, women seeking an opportunity to strut their stuff on TV competing for the attention of one wealthy young gentlemen, cougars, terrible singers, dancers, talent contests, ad infinitum. Doesn't take much to hold the attention of the American public.

The only reality like TV show I watch is Dancing with The Stars. The aren't paid to act themselves, they are paid to learn to dance. It is a tough learn, but many come through. I have always danced, so I know how hard it can be for those who never had the opportunity to learn. As for other reality TV shows, I can't bare to watch them. Like you said, I can watch the news or step out into the world. ...oh, and then there is always here...gets pretty showy at times.

I agree, Dancing with the stars isn't a bad show. At least it has a point. I even went online once and voted for Kelly Osbourne.

It's also choreographed.

I really don't get into the reality tv...it's like you mentioned, if I want to "see" reality, I'll just step outside.

But, some of the shows get the ratings, therefore raking in the cash. And it's all about the bottom line.

At his point who cares if Bret Michaels finds a girlfriend or what the Real Housewives of some city are doing? I guess there is no limit as to how much lame tv some people will watch or they would not have season after season of these shows. I tried to sit through Rock of Love one time with my daughter and I swear my IQ dropped 10 points.

All valid points...but wait! I've got an idea! Why don't we all pool our money together and buy some sophisticated video and surveillance equipment? Then we can plant cameras inside George W. Bush's house. America can see for themselves if W's really as stupid as he made himself out to be while in the White House!

Think it'll get the ratings?

I saw enough of that show the 8 years he was in office.

I think it's all a waste of time, but I don't watch TV so my opinion isn't worthwhile here. Still, it's a good blog.

Well with the last comment regarding Bush you just ruined any credibility you may have had with such an ignorant comment.

That's already a publicly record fact

I like some of the shows, while others suck in my opinion.
