Yanno Frank....I just love being retired. I could never imagine what it would be like but it's better than I could've dreamed. I've never once felt "lost" without anything to do. I've never felt useless and tossed aside. I can stay endlessly busy...if I so choose.

I'm a hard worker so I never minded the working end of working...I just hated punching a time clock...that HAVING to be there at someone else's demand.

I pretty much had my freedom after I retired in '05 until my family began to need more of me starting in '08. That was a long siege and even though I loved them dearly I didn't feel retired anymore.

Now that is behind me and I'm just wallowing in my freedom again. I only wish I could have as many years retired as I had of those I had to work...that would be awesome.

And yes....of course I do......

When I retire I want to move to Tahiti. Cause it sounds warm.

But, I have a feeling I'll stay in Michigan. Why? Family of course. We're close, and moving that far away from them, I can't see myself doing it. Now, if we were to say....hit the Mega Millions Jackpot...then we could all move to a warmer climate.

But, I'm not going to sit here and make plans on what to do with retirement. Me and plans, just don't agree. Every time I've made plans for vacations or other trips, they never turn out. So, I'm thinking (not planning ) that when I can retire, I'm gonna just kick back and enjoy it however and whichever way I can.

being retired does have a few good points. you usually don't have to be anywhere you don't want to be until you get there. no bosses, or irksome co-workers. and all those little things you had wanted to do, books you wanted to read, or hobbies you dind't have time for, now you do. the one big draw back i find with mine tho is the money is severely restricted, and i have to watch jsut about every penny i spend. other than that, it can be ok, but if you don't keep busy at something your mind turns to mush, and your body soon follows.

Well Frank, what did you imagine you might be doing when you retired?

One of the things we forget about retirement is that it doesn't come with an operation manual. We may not always have a 'plan' about what we want or need to do. We just kind of drift until we find something meaningful to do. Meaningful is subjective, so it's only what's important to you that counts... as far as what you choose to do or not do.

I think the best retirement situation is where folks are actively engaged in what they enjoy doing as well as physically active every day... preferrably with family and friends. Hope you'll find your way to doing something you really want to do.

This is true. The other side is that there are a lot of things a person would like to do once they have the time, but the downer is that they often don't have enough money to be able to do them.

My brother retired for two years after selling his business. He thought he'd be playing golf everyday, hanging around the club, and spend more time with his family. Well the kids were off to their own pursuits, the club became boring because the only people that were there were older. He didn't have much in common with them, other then golf and he never played with them because they didn't play as well. The upshot was he went back to work on a part time basis as a consultant. Possibly something you might consider.
