Lately there has been hoopla on the news about comments Senator Harry Reid made about President Obama.
Reid
Seems like Sharpton, Jackson, and others are willing to "let it go", yet, I remember when Trent Lott made his comment in regards to Strom Thurman, can't remember the exact quote, but basically it was interpreted to mean that if Thurman had been president, then there would still be segregation. Anyway...I remember Sharpton, Jackson, and the Democrats wanted Lott's head on a platter so to speak.
Maybe it's because I don't affiliate myself with either party that I can see the double standard here. Both Lott and Reid made insensitive remarks, yet, where Lott basically got crucified, with Reid it's ok? I don't think so. Lott apologized, yet, he was still made out to be a pariah...and believe me...I never liked Trent Lott myself, but, I didn't think he should have been ousted like he was over something he said, even if was stupid and insensitive. And now we have Reid, and, there's no uproar? Except on Fox, I heard the story on Fox and Friends and couldn't believe it. All I've got to say is, fair is fair...if Trent Lott had to step down, then Reid should also.

Here's Rev. Sharpton explaining his reasoning.
The cliff notes version is that he doesn't feel that it's a double standard. He emphasizes context. His own take seems to be that Sen. Reid made a statement that was offensive, but that Trent Lott's comments were intolerable.
I don't know how Jesse Jackson feels about the subject. I would guess that his "uncharacteristic silence" may have something to do with the fact that he had his own gaffe when Obama was running for election.

Reid really didn''t say anything that isn't true from just looking and listening but like you I don't associate myself with either side. I try to decide which one is lying less than the others. I've said it once and I'll say it again....Politicians are all crooks no matter how you slice it.

When anybody makes a gaffe of this type, takes off hiking to Argentina to hook up with a mistress, etc., the people of the other party always scream. Nothing new there, it's always been this way. Sometimes the culprit is forced to step down, sometimes not.

These sorts of things tend to get a lot of media attention when nothing else is happening. Now they have a major earthquake in Haiti so we likely won't hear about it again.
