Last night The Simpsons celebrated their 450th episode. 450! It's currently the longest running animated series ever, and the longest running sitcom ever. Currently, the record for the longest running scripted prime time show is held by Gunsmoke at 625 episodes.

I used to be a huge Simpsons fan. I stopped watching consistently around season 14. Since then, the show has been (IMHO) in decline. Still, though a shell of its former self, it has its moments.

I was glad to see it pass The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and take the title of longest running sitcom. I'm not sure though if it can put out another 175 episodes and have anything at all left to say.

Are there any Simpson's fans here? Either way, what are you're thoughts on The Simpsons having 20 years under their belt? (they're almost old enough to drink) I guess what I'm most curious about is this: Obviously ratings are going to be the ultimate decider for Fox, but should they get to episode 600 and then have their ratings fall off a cliff, should they be kept around just so that they can pass Gunsmoke? A sort of thank you from Fox to Groening.

Fox's other mega hit show American Idol is also in the news. Season 9 is about to kick off, this time without Paula Abdul. Are the Idol fans here happy to see her go? Looking forward to Ellen Degeneres? Or do you think the show won't be the same without her? Simon Cowell has also stated this will be his last year. Will you watch when he's gone?

I never cared for the show much, myself. However, I have been known to watch a couple of the tryout episodes. Simon's snark is the only appeal that show has, so I wouldn't watch it with out him. I'm curious if Ellen will fit in at all. I don't really see the point of casting her, considering she's never worked in the music industry.

Yes, I use to watch it a while back. I eventually got bored with the show and quit watching it. I think the show has run it's course...

Not a fan of either show so don't have a clue. I heard something about that on the news. It might be the end of the show with two people leaving. But might depend on who replaces them.

American Idol? Paula Abdul left and is going to be replaced by Ellen DeGeneres. Simon Cowell is leaving at the end of this series.

I have faded away from the Simpsons over the years. I have never had anything to do with American Idol.

Casual Simpsons fan here. Seen the movie, it was alright...needs a second viewing for me to be sure I actually liked it. More a fan-fan of Futurama, since there's less seasons to go back over and watch...well, before they re-re aired on Comedy Central.

Anyway, since I dont have cable, I watch old Simpsons episodes online via surfthechannel.com. Season 3 to season 6 is where it really started picking up, and I like you don't care for the later stuff. Yuck.

American I"dull"- I watched 1st season, and fell off midway. I watched last year, because my friend told me about this Indian-American guy to watch for, who made it to the top 6 but was predictably thrown aside for the "spectacle" that was Adam Lambert. In my opinion, when Simon leaves, I hope it goes out with him and is eventually canceled. I dont even think Ellen's sunniness can save it.

I used to watch the Simpsons, but, it started to be the same thing over and over with just different dialog. Should Fox keep it running just to surpass Gunsmoke? If the ratings of the show are in good standing, let it run, but if ratings are falling, I see it as a waste of time if people aren't watching it.

American Idol, I've never really watched to begin with. Yes, I've caught a couple of snippets here and there, and thought Simon to be a jerk, but, that's what drew people in I guess. If he leaves, ratings may drop...then again, maybe not.

Okay, I admit it. I watch American Idol. My husband thinks it's the dumbest show out there, which well...he may be right, but I got sucked into it after the 2nd season. I am looking forward to watching Ellen on there. Paula was just a train wreck on that show IMO. I like Simon though. A lot of people think he is a dick, but he's just honest and doesn't sugar coat things like Paula used to. I will be sad to see him go actually.

I love the Simpsons and watch it on a regular basis. I don't feel the show has declined, but I guess a lot of shows always seem at their finest in the beginning.

I used to love the Simpsons, note the words used to. Sigh.. now it seems like I'm on a South Park kick.

American Idol.. I watched one season.. the year that Jordin Sparks won.. I'm sorry that I wasted that many hours of my life. I adore Ellen Degeneres to death.. but .. Idol? I don't care what you do.. it will never be good. (In my opinion only)

I wish she'd do more on So You Think You Can Dance.. at least that show is entertaining.

Cowell's going to own his own new show on Fox, "The X- Factor". American Idol which I've never watched, is being thrown a lifeline with DeGeneres, but the boat will sink. They'll come up with something else for the moonies to stare at, but I doubt Fox will continue carrying the load. Good riddance.

The Simpsons...

I used to watch the Simpsons, but, it started to be the same thing over and over with just different dialog.

Sigh.. now it seems like I'm on a South Park kick.

I'm reminded of the South Park episode "Simpson's Did It". After 20 years on the air, is it even possible to have more to say?

Season 3 to season 6 is where it really started picking up

Couldn't agree more. Season 3 is where they started to really develop a voice. Season 6 is the Simpson's in its prime. I think its somewhere around 9-10 where it starts to go down hill. Though later than that, they still have some good episodes, the Tommaco episode comes to mind...

I don't feel the show has declined, but I guess a lot of shows always seem at their finest in the beginning.

Every now and then, I think there just isn't a point anymore. Then I'm reminded, it's still amongst the best shows currently on tv. If only by default.

South Park I watch occasionally. Same with Futurama.

About Futurama, it's odd how Fox seems to randomly pick on some of their own shows. Futurama was just getting going then they moved to the time slot that always gets preempted by football.

Family Guy had good ratings, then they started hiding it and randomly changing the time slot, until its ratings went down and they canceled it.

There have been non-animated shows they did similar things with.

Simon is beginning to refer to the "it" factor. IMO, it's his way of leading into his new show. A little bit of , "that's more up my alley than Idol". It's probably going to overtake Idol.
Just heard on a syndicated station this a.m. that the average viewership of Idol is 40 years old.
And honestly...the 20-25 year olds have never even heard of a lot of the songs the Idol contestants are singing. They're "from" the 40 year old's generation.
Nothing lasts forever.
Even if you want it to.

Good point princess. American Idol is primetime viewing for the over 40 crowd. Largely a female audience it's a good time fo the men to slip into the basement and slug down a few beers where they're finding large piles of laundry unattended. Never having seen the show I can only suspect Cowell sees the demise as well and isn't going to associate himself with a sinking ship. DeGeneres is extremely popular but as I said before just a temporary lifeline, but will appeal to the femine populace. The dishes are piling up!!!!

AW, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 'Family Guy' is still on the air. I know they have 100 million dollar contract with Fox thru 2012. From what I've read, there has been delays on the new episodes because the creator Seth MacFarlane has been working on a spinoff off called 'Cleveland' that is based off of the same 'Family Guy' character.

I used to watch 'The Simpsons' back in the late 90's back when the show was peaking. It's certainly had a great run and has been a huge influence on any animated adult cartoon produced since its inception.

Then 'The Simpsons' starting getting stale and 'South Park' arrived on the scene. 'South Park' is the only animated comedy that i watch these days. I never miss an episode. The satire is biting, and the storylines always revolve around current events and other topical issues.

But I can't stand 'Family Guy'!...although it has it's moments, all of it's jokes are interchangeable and unrelated to the story line. Even the creator Seth MacFarlane admitted as much. He would use sketches intended for earlier episodes, and recycle them into later ones!

AW, my apologies for digressing...I know your blog was about The Simpsons/American idol, but since South Park/Family Guy" were mentioned in the blog comments, I had to get in my 2 cents.

Family Guy was canceled after the 3rd. It was picked up for syndication by Adult Swim. During the hiatus, it's DVD sales were ridiculous. Fox picked it back up and it's been on (with a regular time slot) since then.

I'm sure it isn't the dumbest show. I can't think of any stupider ones off the top of my head but I'm sure somewhere somebody did, and put it on air. It's an awfully hard contest to win.

I thought he owned Idol? Anyway, there is already "The X-Factor" in the UK. Simon is a panel judge there (I think). I've never seen it but from descriptions it sounds exactly like Idol. I always thought Idol was the American version of X-Factor, but Wikipedia disagrees with me on this.

I'm sorry that I wasted that many hours of my life. I adore Ellen Degeneres to death.. but .. Idol?
I wish she'd do more on So You Think You Can Dance.. at least that show is entertaining.

I thought Ellen was a bizarre choice. I guess she may have a similar demographic, but I don't see Idol as being a good fit for her. I don't think there's really much overlapping taste. The above quote really points to this...

I remember they canceled it back in the 2nd and 3rd seasons...I thought you meant the show is currently canceled

No, it's not the dumbest. He just says that because he knows I like to watch it. Actually, I like watching it in the beginning and at the end. The middle is kinda boring to me. I usually will lose interest until it gets down to about the top 6 or so. I like watching all the train wrecks when they are doing all the auditions. I can't believe some of these people that think they can actually sing I almost get embarrassed for them.

I think that Dancing With The Stars show is dumber than American Idol. Pretty much all reality TV is stupid except I like Survivor. The rest of them.....
