“Ok, what am I doing here” I asked myself as I walked into the mirror lined workout room at the local gym.

“I haven’t had tap shoes on since was at least 9” I muttered as I looked at the brand new shiny taps I bought for this class.

“Well it can’t be too bad, I think I’m the youngest one in the class.” As I looked around to my fellow students most of who were in their 60’s or better
.
Then Tami our perky less than 30-something teacher walked into the room. “Let’s get started ladies we have a lot to cover today.”

Now that didn’t sound good at all.

Ready Tap..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..Side..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..Back..2..3..4..5..6..7..8.. Around..2..3..4..5..6..7..8. Change foot, repeat. Not too bad, the tempo isn’t too fast, but we’re not dragging either. This could be fun.

Then the taps doubled and tripled with the music changing tempo. “Ok, I think I might be in over my head here...” I muttered to myself.

After warm-up the ladies worked on a routine they had started many months before.

“Line up for Candy Man”.

This number by Christine Aguilera was fashioned like a 30’s big band number; its quick beat makes an excellent number for a tap performer. But I’m not a performer.

I’m a fast study. I just haven’t tapped in many years. I was on the dance line high school and also taught Winter Guard and Dance line before I moved south. This routine looked like something out of a Fred Astaire – Ginger Rogers’s film.

“Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, back, Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, front. Ball-n-chain Stomp ball-in-chain. Stomp. Wait a minute what was that last step you did? Tap, Tap tap, Hop, slide, Tap, Slide Hop? OK I need to work on that one. “

And on went the hour. Most of the steps I knew, heck I taught them. Although there were a few innovations that would have made Gregory Hines step back and wonder what the count was on that one. But at the end of the secession I was flushed, the back of my shirt was dripping, and I was out of breath.

Then Tami put on some slower music so that we could all stretch and cool down. As I stretched the already tired muscles, I could feel my every nerve ending screaming. The muscles gave with each stretch, but I knew in the morning I was going to feel every last one of them protesting the work out they got that day.

But I’ll be back Thursday morning with my taps on.

I would love to learn how to tap dance... or clog, guess they'd be just about the same... They have lots of clogging contests around here and I'm just mesmerized when I watch them... kinda like the Riverdance ensemble.

So was this a joke or have you taken up tap lessons? Kudos to you if you have!!!

WOW you mean you've never worked out to the point you felt sore in places that you forgot you had?? Believe me, there are muscles wrapped in muscles in our body, I was find the one attached to the skeleton.

That is a form of tap. I've done a little of that before too. Go find a class. I know they have beginner adult classes these days. We baby boomers are reliving our childhood, don't you know.

As For DKW, I'm dragging him of too Ballroom Dancing class. This should be fun. Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm glad you enjoyed my story.

Why I did it is beyond me but I sacrificed hard earned cash for the play station 3 tonight. I hope it's well worth it. Everyone was sold out & it was a bitch to find one but I prevailed... Okay back to your blog .... I only know how to tap dance on someone's head but I'll gladly take the lessons.....
