The wife got are now 7 month old an outfit from Kohls for Christmas. He received the same outfit from someone else so she returned the one she bought with the original register receipt. It cost $12 plus the tax so the receipt showed she payed $12.84 for it. She waited in line for 30 minutes and only got $10.18 back. On holiday returns Kohls is charging an unadvertised return fee. What kind of SHIT is that? They charged $2.66 or a 21% to return the item. That just might be the last time we shop there. I can kinda understand if it was a gift receipt but it wasn't it was the original receipt from when she bought it.

No a gift receipt has a code that tells the store exactly how much was paid for the item. I worked retail for years and this is the first time I have heard of a return fee on an item. Now I have had problems with Walmart giving the sale price for something that was bought at full price. Better to stick with places like Sears and Penney's for kids clothes. You do get a full refund if you return at item with the receipt.

Unless a store openly advertises a return fee, they have to refund ALL of what you actually paid for an item If you ave the actual receipt. Personally, I would have stayed right there in line a little longer and demanded to speak with a manager, not allowing them to continue with the rest of the line.
Since it is already over, I would contact the district or regional office and complain.

Don't call the regional office, call the corporate office and raise hell. It will usually get you better results. Does you local news station have a comsumer reporter? Maybe they need to hear about this policy.

Look for that kind of shady deal to spread like wildfire, the recession gives places a blanket excuse to start screwing the customer, and asking them to understand and like it

You'll probably get the fee back, but at what cost to your time and level of frustration. That's how they get the majority and they're well aware of it. I'd go the consumer report route, local news station. Maybe a few calls to the right people rather than a number of calls to Kohl's.

Something certainly isn't right. Kohl's claims they do NOT have a restocking fee.
2009 restocking fee survey
Another site says many only charge a fee if the item is opened, to avoid consumers "borrowing" an item. Of course yours would not apply.
Here
And I would have to agree with that policy, as when we had a possibility of a hurricane in Louisiana last year and DID lose power for around 9 days in Alexandria, people bought generators( sold out EVERY store in town), used them, then tried to return them. We are talking truckloads...
I would definitely be asking someone some questions about your purchase.
