Is A Journal Private In A Relationship?

I read a joke the other day about the difference in a mans journal entry and his wifes for the same day.
Hers was 1 1/2 pages long about the day. His was two sentences about the same day, spent together. And they were nothing alike.... Go figure. lol

I thought about how many thousands of pages I have journaled over the years...some saying everything and some saying nothing much, just words on a page.

When I was a teenager I kept a diary. I think I wrote in it mostly when I was mad at my Mother. So it was pretty full.
One day she read it and wrote a response to something I had written. And then of all the evil things she could have done, she let my boyfriend read it.
I happened to be across the road burning trash for my Grandma and when he brought it over and asked me about some things and showed me what my Mom had written I threw it in the fire.

Years later I started journaling........everything.
Things that happened, hopes, thoughts, disappointments, anger, love.... etc..

As I was sorting through some old papers and such one day I ran across a few of my journals and decided to sit and read them........ Basically there was my entire life in my hand writing. And much more info than I ever wanted anyone to know, even in the event of my death. So I found and shredded all of them.
Later I discovered there were a few things I wished I would have kept.... sigh.

If you knew that your significant other/spouse/partner kept a journal and you knew where it was or just happened to stumble across it one day......with that person being gone for the day.....would you read it? Skim through it?

What about after a fight... or making love... or if you thought something was bothering them but they wouldn't say?

Or do you feel that the other persons thoughts and such are private unless they want to share them with you? Or do you feel you have a right to know and it's okay for you to read their journal?

i think thats a personal choice tho i'm betting in most cases the writer would prefer it to remain THEIR thoughts....i think alot of people keep journals to let things out ....or maybe writting is therapeutic for them in some way??

i'll ponder it a bit and maybe more later...sighh for now work work work

I don't know. I mean if my husband kept one and I knew where it was, I have to admit it would be very hard for me not to read it or at least skim through it. Would I want him reading mine? Honest, it wouldn't matter to me if he did or not. To me, there is nothing to hide from a spouse. JMO.

Good mornin

Reading someones journal is a big and could ruin their trust. Journals are someones personal thoughts, and should only be read IF permission has been given .... but do you really want to go there????

I have to agree with Griz on this one...I don't keep a journal, but if I did, or if hubby did, I wouldn't read his and wouldn't want him reading mine. I see nothing wrong with maybe reading parts of it out loud to the other that you wanted to share though.

It is a personal expression that should only be shared if the writer chooses do so. Many people that keep journals do not reveal that they do so.

Okay....I cannot lie. If I had a chance to read my husband's diary, your damn right I would. Is that the right thing to do? No...I know it isn't, but you know what? Curiosity would just get the best of me. I would read it and then not tell him I did.....okay ya'll can judge me now, but at least I'm being honest.

I have kept a journal through the years. Anyone can try to read it. When I was a kid my mother went through everything in my room so I made up my own alphabet and always wrote my journal in that. I know that probably drove her crazy because I knew she had been through it and was probably frustrated that she could not tell what it said. Same with people in relationships through the years. I always saw my thoughts as private property and took steps to keep it that way.

Personally..I think that a "Journal" is very Private!!!
do you feel that the other persons thoughts and such are private unless they want to share them with you?

This may seem sick, especially to mothers inclined to snoop into their kids' private property. But wouldn't baiting with a fake journal or diary be a hoot with a lot of lurid, sleazy entries in it like:
Today, I discovered a man's cum tastes better than a boy's and the flavor of every race is different. This is true for women and girls also.

Myself personally, I would respect his privacy. I wouldn't read it, and I would hope he would be the same if he found mine.
