It's bad enough when you have to go to the bank and press 1 for english or make phone calls to/for appointments, then you get the solicitors that are trying to sell you something and can't speak a damn word of english...how in the hell do they think they're going to sell you something you can't understand... I just got one of those phone call and had to vent cause the shit pisses me off .. what country do we live in?... I thought I was in the United States. I'm not prejudice, just fed up with having to press any # for english.

I called a workers comp insurance carrier at work the other day, it said "to continue in English, press 1" so... I didn't.. just to see what it would do! It went straight to spanish....................that pissed me right off! And when I got a human representative on the phone, I told him I thought that was completely outrageous! And asked for the name and number of the person in charge! I'm going to be giving them a call on Monday morning!

I don't encounter that anymore. I have called a lot customer services and get an automated greeting in English. It then quickly breaks into Spanish and tells them to push a key, not us English speakers. Then the automatic call rapidly proceeds in English. I would be the the first to agree with you a few years ago, but no more. I used to have to push one for English in the past, and it pissed me off. I have not had to that for a couple of years or more.

When I get the prompt to press 1 for English, I start pressing the 0 continuously until someone comes on the line wanting to know what the Hell I'm doing.

Companies do this because they make a ton of money by catering to Spanish-speaking customers. If they thought they'd make more money leaving Spanish off, they'd do that. The USA, unlike Canada, is not legally a bilingual country, and the only states that are legally bilingual are New Mexico, Hawaii and Louisiana.
As a consumer, the answer is simple. If you don't like it, don't patronize the business. I personally don't care if they offer a Spanish option. I don't want it to have to fight past it to get to English. I agree with WoW... most default to English and that works for me.
If you travel internationally (I do at least once a year), you have no doubt noticed that nearly all ATMs in Europe include an English option. I wonder if the locals in non-English speaking countries get pissed off about it?
