Well guys and gals...it's almost that time of year again and I'm not talkin' turkeys or men in big red suits. I'm talkin' about the biggest shopping day of the year. Now if you're brave enough to venture out on this day, here are a few of my tips for surviving all the madness.

1. Strategize, Strategize: Get the Thanksgiving Day newspaper in your area and flip through all of those ads. A lot of the ads are time-sensitive so you will miss out if you're not there before 10:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. in the morning. As well, some stores will open as early as 4:00 a.m. so you will need to decide which stores to hit first, and which stores can be hit later in the day. Also, bring your ads along to avoid any disputes over how much an item is supposed to cost on Friday. Having the ads will come in handy at stores promising “lowest-price” guarantees – especially if you find lower prices elsewhere.

2. Dress Comfortably and Bring Snacks: If you're determined to brave the crowds then dress comfortably. Dress in layers so that you can adjust accordingly, as some of those stores can get pretty toasty with all those shoppers. Comfortable shoes are also a must, and so are portable snacks and drinks. They’ll prevent you from having to endure low blood-sugar levels, dehydration or congested food courts. Yours truly has not waited in a food court line in 5 years. What a waste of time.

3. Make Friends with People in Line: A spirit of camaraderie will not only make the long, dark wait more pleasant — it also could prove to be a godsend if you must give up your place in line so you can run to the bathroom. Trust me...this little gem of advice has saved me hours in waiting because some truly lovely people become quite vicious on this day and would not even hold their own grandmother's place in line. Sad but very true.

4. Pick the Right Shopping Buddy: Unless you want to bicker and feel frustrated all day, think hard (I'm talkin' really hard) about who would get into the spirit of a shopping day like this. Taking your boyfriend, lover or husband is like taking a walking argument...it just don’t work. It's also wise to leave your kids at home. Trust me when I say I have witnessed countless arguments and temper tantrums in the wee hours on this day and it ain't pretty.

5. Shop with a List: You'll accomplish so much more if you shop with a list. You'll also know who you've already bought for and who you still need to buy for. Trust me when I tell you how you can spend way too much time and money if you don't have a shopping list to guide you through this nightmare. It doesn't have to be a fancy list...it just needs to help keep you on track so you can accomplish what you set out to do.

Good luck and I hope you find all the bargains your hunting for.

Straddle: Black Friday shopping IS a sport and not for the faint of heart.

ynot: Maybe I should bring you along as a body guard when I go to Wal-Mart. Now that store can be downright dangerous on this day.

Sugar: Good tip. I do some of my shopping online as well and it's definitely easier and stress-free.

PTN: Thanks!

Sunshine: You can do it...you can do it...you can do it!

I know it's hellacious to shop on this day but you can really find some amazing bargains, and save tons of money.

Night: You're in luck. Some of the dollar stores in the local malls particpate in black friday madness.

Straddle: Watch yourself...I can delete your comments if I want to.

LMAO @ Doc

girlcountry: If you go with someone fun, it can be fun. Get in and get out...and then go for a late breakfast. That's what I always do and it seems to work well.

After working in retail for 12 years I will let you in on a little secret. There are only one or two items per store that you are going to save more money on by shopping on Black Friday. There are usually better sales before and after that day. I have found people usually save more money if they shop early and have a better selection. Seeing that it is too late for that now, I might suggest shopping Wednesday because a lot of the stores have everything on sale anyway unless you intend to get a doorbuster on Friday. Just know there will be a limited amount of those items and of course once they are gone there will be plenty of the more expensive items they expect people to buy. Black Friday has always been a sales strategy to lure people into the stores with promises of big savings on certain products because they know if those are gone they will buy something else at a greater cost. There is a reason they only have a limited number of the "bargains"

If you are shopping on that day be early, be prepared to stand in line for a couple of hours in the middle of the night as some stores are opening at 4am and good luck. I will be sound asleep in my bed at that time.
