The other day I noticed something quite odd after my trip to Walmart where I purchased TP and a number of other household items. I use Quilted Northern TP at my house. There appeared to be something odd about the TP that I had not noticed before. When a roll was placed on the TP holder there was an unusual amount of space between the ends of the roll of TP and the TP holder and the roll of TP seemed to fit looser on the holder. So using this amazing device that I am typing on I did a little research and found out that Georgia-Pacific tried to pull a fast one on me. They shortened the roll by approximately 1/2 inch and increase the diameter of the cardboard tube in the center of the TP there for decreasing the number of sheets on each roll.
Now that wouldn't bother me a whole lot if they would have advertised it on the packaging like they do when they increase the size. They could have put something on there like they were trying to save some trees or in an effort to be more "GREEN", but no they decreased the amount of product and left the price the same.
Here is a response from Georgia-Pacific to a consumer that contacted them about it.
Anonymous said... This was GPs response to my inquiry regarding smaller rolls at the same high price:
"Thank you for contacting the Georgia-Pacific Consumer Response Center. Georgia-Pacific places tremendous importance on the opinions we receive from our customers. We understand you may have some concerns about the roll width and/or sheet count of Quilted Northern Soft & Strong(r). Quilted Northern Soft & Strong(r) is about 1/2 inch narrower than before, and we have slightly reduced the sheet count. Because of today's economic climate, cost is a factor. We made the decision to slightly reduce the roll to bring you the bathroom tissue you trust at the same value. Quilted Northern Soft & Strong continues to provide the cleanliness and comfort you have come to expect, making it a great value in today's economy. As always, Quilted Northern Soft & Strong(r) is thick, absorbent, and gentle on your skin. The bathroom tissue features strength and durability for cleanliness, with softness and thickness for comfort. With Quilted Northern Soft & Strong(r), you do not have to compromise comfort for clean."
We made the decision to slightly reduce the roll to bring you the bathroom tissue you trust at the same value. How can you decrease the amount of something and continue to charge the same amount and it be the same value as before?????????

I just mentioned this to my roommate and she encountered the same thing in Sweden recently but didn't remember what brand it was. There have been ploys like this for years. I can recall coffee being sold in one, two and three pound cans. Now the cans are anywhere from 11.5 to 13 ounces in what used to be a one pound can. Same principle applies to canned vegetables. One used to get sugar in five pound bags, now they are four pound bags.

I noticed Breyers & the Store Brand ice cream yesterday at the store. I never buy ice cream because it's not necessary, but I saw 2 for $5 and was like wow....cheap. Yeah, the container are way smaller & slimmer. I've noticed it with alot of stuff lately.

It's not just TP...I've noticed other products have decreased in their size and the price stays the same....or better yet the price has been jacked up. It's this damn economy......companies are trying to save money. Meanwhile.....consumers still make the same amount of money they have for years

I have known they have been doing it for quite some time on various products. But TP holders are pretty much a standard size so the TP looks funny on the TP holder now.
I have noticed the ice cream also. It is still cheaper than buying it at an ice cream parlor though.

I used to buy the 50lb bag of Ol Roy dog food at Wal Mart, at the time, it was $13 for it. One day, when I picked up that "50lb" bag, I remember thinking to myself that it felt lighter somehow. I got home, and as I was putting the dog food away, I looked at the weight on it....44.6 lbs. So, roughly 6lbs less but still charged for 50lbs. This happened around the time gas and diesel prices were flying to the $4 a gallon mark. Anyway, when I contacted Wal Mart and the company that makes Ol Roy, there excuse was something along the lines that less weight meant less fuel used blah blah blah. And I was complaining about this rip off to my Dad, and he told me he gets his dogs 50lb bags of Old Yeller at Krogers for the same price, but, if you have a Kroger card, you get a discount. So, for the past year, that $15.99 bag of Old Yeller I've been buying at Kroger has cost me $12.77. And, it is indeed 50lbs. I was in Wal Mart yesterday and looked at the Ol Roy...it's still 44.6 lbs, and now they are charging almost $17 for it.

That is what I did for my dogs food also. My dogs like the Old Yeller much better than the Ol Roy, so it worked out I pay less for more and the dogs eat all their food instead of leaving it all over the place.

Mine get Old Yeller also, we call it Disney Dog. But it is cheaper here. The regular price is $13.99 and it goes on sale about half of the time. Sometimes it is as low as $10.99.

That kind of shit has been going on far longer than when the economy went sour. It's just worse now and John Q. Public has always gotten the short end of the stick...

That kind of shit has been going on far longer than when the economy went sour. It's just worse now and John Q. Public has always gotten the short end of the stick.. That is so true Softie. I think now with everything so bad, people are either more aware, or, care more.
As for the Old Yeller, when I did start buying it last year, it was on sale for $10.99, it's now up to $12.99...still, getting 50lbs of dog food.
What cracks me up is I saw a recent commercial for Miejer's here, and their slogan is something like, "always low prices", yet, I go to Kroger, and their prices are lower than Miejers. Also, having a Kroger card, I can get the in store discounts. It's nice to see a total that rings up at $75 go down to $50 thanks to in store discounts.

That wasn't a response, it was a sales pitch!
We made the decision to slightly reduce the roll to bring you the bathroom tissue you trust at the same value. Same value?? How can you have the "same value" by reducing the amount of product you were getting before, at the same price??

I love all the catch words..."trust", "comfort", "clean"... I used to use all the snuggly brands that were extra cushie on my tooshie, but realized they always ran out faster than the less expensive but extensive alternate brands. I buy Scott. It does the trick and I can use the amount per wipe that I like based on it's thinness and still flush convienently without disrupting my toilets flow. The size of the roll fits perfect on the roll dispenser and this make me very happy. ...as far as getting my ass clean, I take a shower right after I do the do anyway...
