It is said that insanity is doing the same thing the same way and expecting different results. Chasing the vision of a soulmate often becomes an obsession driven by being in love with being in love. Infatuation and lust become mistaken for being in love. If you do not come to first love somebody as a person, you cannot expect to really ever fall in love.
Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Can you see the forest for the trees?
An oak grows slowly gaining strength over time so as to endure the forces of life. A cottonwood grows rapidly gaining weakness over time to become increasingly vulnerable to the same forces. When the fury of the storms come to bear, the oak will stand having lost leaves, while the cottonwood will be shattered having lost limbs.
Concerning relationships over the course of a quarter of a century, oaks will have silver anniversaries while cottonwoods will have exes. The oaks pick up pearls of wisdom and are able to see with increased clarity by putting the us ahead of the you or the I. The cottonwoods wear the emperor’s new clothes because they never look in the mirror.
Oaks realize that life is a journey. Cottonwoods only see a destination. Oaks have grown to love having asked less while giving more. Cottonwoods have come to require more while offering less. Oaks see what is. Cottonwoods see what is not.
Over time, the oaks will have the journey, the destination and love. The cottonwoods will have only themselves.
