Stranger Allegedly Slaps Crying Toddler in Store to 'Shut Her Up'

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a Walmart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telephone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say after Stephens slapped the girl, she began screaming.

Personally...if it had been my niece or nephew, and some stranger thought he/she had the "right" to slap them, I would be in jail also because I would have been kicking some ass.

HOW THE FUCK DO YOU SHUT UP A TODDLER? If anyone knows without hitting them please let me in on that secret........

As for that man, he is lucky it was not my granddaughter because there wouldn't be enough of him left for the police to arrest...........and i am sorry but what the fuck was the mother doing while this man hit that child 4 times...........she should have picked up something and smacked the asshole back.....

If it were my grandchildren that man would have got the first thing I could lay my hands on up side his head.

On the other hand after working in a store, I know there are a lot of parents who do not even try to have any control over their children. If you have been out shopping for hours and your kid is screaming in a store, take them home. If your kid is crying because you said no to something deal with them yourself so the whole world does not have to hear a temper tantrum every time you go in a store. And it is not ok for you kids to climb on the tables and racks, knock clothes into the floor or use a fitting room as the rest room. I guess the main thing is remember there are other people around too.

That being said it is never ok to hit someone's child. Hope he gets some time for it.

What the fuck? There are some people that have some fucking nerve and think they can do whatever the hell they want....like it's their world and we are jut visiting.

I think after the initial shock of someone hitting my child, I would have went ballistic too! The poor kid was probably tired or something....it's a 2 y/o kid for fuck's sake!

I would be in jail for beating the shit out of that man. I would have punched him or grabbed anything close by to hit that fucker. NOBODY would ever get away with hitting my child. Period.

I understand what you're saying SheWolf, I've worked at a hotel for the last 14 years. I've seen temper tantrums, and, I even one time had to report a case of child abuse to my manager. I'm sorry, there's discipline, then there's abuse, and when this adult used one of our hangers to hit her kid repeatedly, I wasn't going to ignore that. But, back on topic, I've seen kids stop in the halls at the hotel, throw themselves on the ground kicking and screaming, and the parents embarrassed, but, I've never seen a total stranger go up and hit the kid. That is a line no one should cross.

AMEN!!!! Parents that don't deal with it are just plain rude and inconsiderate.

If I or my brother acted up in public, we were taken to the restroom or outside then outback for a discussion involving a hand and a butt. I clearly recall it happening to me and my brother...once.

And saying in a timid little voice "honey please do not do that" usually does not work on a kid on a rampage. I never felt like slapping a kid, however some parents were another matter for letting their kids destroy the place. Our security threw some of them out of the store after their kids had been screaming and throwing things for about 15 minutes. These were not toddlers but kids five and six years old who were spoiled brats who thought they should have everything they wanted. I blame the parents for that type of behavior, not the kids. They should never have let it get to that point.

For starters I do not believe in striking children for any reason. Number two, I would be in jail, in serious trouble for every type assult charge you can define, I would have taken a baseball bat to that mother fucker big time. To me, that's how you deal with idiots like that!

I saw this on CNN last night and told my daughter that he must've slapped the right person's kid, otherwise he'd be a dead ol' bastard. If it had been me and one of my kids or grandkids, I would've been arrested without a doubt in the middle of WalMart.

I can't believe this happened in Georgia and the man didn't at least get his ass whipped. You just don't interfere with someone's child down here. That is just not how it's done. All I can say is must've been someone visiting from another state.

Have you seen the picture of the man? He just looks like a grumpy ol' bastard.

My first thought is why isn't the mom in jail, because if ANY person were to slap my child I'd lay them out and and would probably be in jail beside the bastard for battery. I'm very anti-violent but if you lay a finger on my child they'll be pulling me off the person.

I am not one of those parents who allows my children to scream bloody murder while I'm shopping. It only happened once and I toted my daughter out of the store over my shoulder kicking and screaming. I didn't hit her to make her mind, because I know that hitting a child will never make them quit screaming. In fact it will do just the opposite. His actions just made the situation worse.

Personally I hope the bastard gets fried.
