I read this article today in the newspaper from a columist who I enjoy reading from time to time. For a while now I have seen more and more cases of internet attacks by women in the news more often than with men. Makes one wonder if more women actually do most of this because most women tend to be more emotional beings. Not to sound sexist or anything, but most of these cases that have been in the news have been a lot of women ranging from a woman in her 30's impersonating a teen male getting a teen girl so upset enough with vicious lies to where she (the teen) commited suicide.

Kathleen Parker commentary: Bloggers soon could rue their hasty words
By Kathleen Parker

When Oscar Wilde observed that the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about, he could not have imagined the Internet.

The wild frontier we now know and (mostly) love called the blogosphere is a not-always-OK corral where free speech is armed and often dangerous.

The latest showdown is between two women -- a Vogue model and an anonymous blogger -- at odds over what is permissible in the name of free expression. After the blogger called Liskula Cohen a "skank," among other things, the model demanded the blogger's identity from the blog host, Google.

Outraged, the blogger, revealed as Rosemary Port, is launching a $15 million lawsuit against Google for disclosing her identity. Google's Andrew Pederson said that while his company sympathizes with victims of cyber-bullying, "We also take great care to respect privacy concerns and will only provide information about a user in response to a subpoena or other court order."

Voila.

This all may seem like an inside-the-runway spat between two women who don't like each other. As pioneering blogger and law professor Glenn Reynolds noted on Instapundit, "I never would have heard the words 'Liskula Cohen' and 'skank' together if it hadn't been for her blogger-outing litigation efforts."

The model case is significant, however, and raises weighty questions about privacy, anonymity and the future of free e-speech.

The problem of online defamation is hardly new, but several recent lawsuits have begun challenging the anything-goes modus operandi of the Internet. One of the most famous dates to 2006, when Sue Scheff won a staggering $11.3 million verdict against a woman who had posted hundreds of defamatory comments about Scheff and her company, which counsels the parents of troubled teens.

After years of torment that included stalkers and death wishes, Scheff was able to prove that her reputation and business suffered as a result of the defendant's comments. In her new book Google Bomb, due for release Sept. 1 and co-authored with attorney John W. Dozier Jr., Scheff tells the story of her lawsuit and offers advice to others similarly defamed online.

Google bomb is Internet slang for attempting to raise the ranking of a given page during a Google search. The popularity of a page may not reflect the page's relationship to truth, but may be popular for other reasons. Let's just say, nasty sells.

Defusing Google bombs isn't much fun, unless you're a computer geek or have no preferable ways of spending your time. To keep your online profile positive and prominent, you have to blog, tweet and maintain Web sites -- or hire someone to do it for you. Scheff says she resents having to do these things, but, "if you don't own your own name, someone else will."

Scheff considers herself lucky because she was able to hire an attorney as well as an Internet monitoring company, ReputationDefender, that manages her online persona. Others, hundreds of whom write her each week, aren't so fortunate. For example, a wedding photographer lost his business when a single unhappy bride went 'zilla and trashed him online.

"No one is immune," says Scheff. And, just because you're not personally active on the Internet doesn't mean that your persona isn't online -- not necessarily in a good way. The Internet has unleashed that part of ourselves that we used to keep under wraps. Dark thoughts, like the trolls of Mordor, can now surface and thrive by the light of day.

The freedom granted by anonymity and a virtual audience may have been a boon to democracy, affording everyone a voice, but it has been a plague on decency. Inhibition, we lament, is an undervalued virtue.

Scheff's case and the Cohen incident suggest that a new level of accountability, largely missing from personal blogs, may be in the offing. "What you type today can haunt you tomorrow," says Scheff. "People need to know that if you use your mouse and keypad to harm others, there is a price tag."

Harm is the operative word. Although Scheff was able to prove material losses, Cohen likely gained from her brief tenure as a victim. In fact, she has dropped her lawsuit and forgiven the blogger.

No one likes being bashed online or elsewhere -- and public people are familiar with the experience. But even Scheff thinks that in the absence of quantifiable defamation, anonymity deserves protection.

As Google and the courts slug it out, Cohen did manage to BOLD-italicize an oft-ignored lesson: Think before you type.

Or else, someone may want more than a penny for your thoughts.

I do feel that people should be held responsible for what they say towards others on the internet as far as vicious lies go, especially when the person who does the attack tries to hide their identity from others.

I read one of my favorite columists today in the newspaper and thought this topic would be interesting enough to post. This has more to do with what we all have heard in the news about a lot women who try to conseal their identities so they can attack others. If anything pisses me off, it's when people hide behind a keyboard and attack others without anyone knowing who they are.

Most of us on here know each other here, and this blog has really nothing to do with us regulars, even though a lot of drama went down yesterday and today. If any of you are offended by this blog and feel that I'm referring to you, I'm not. Like I stated, it's about what we hear in the news about people who are attacking others who are trying to hide their identity that makes the national news.

Wow Shawn, you mean like if they make up a fake profile and use it to come back from "the dead" you know that dark, lonely place in cyber space where people go that have been banned from a site, multiple times, but they come back over and over and over and over again to viciously attack others?? you mean something like that???

Well, in a sense, yes. I mean, that would be a classic case since most if not all of us on here don't know her identity when she's always on the attack. But in all honesty, I was referring to in general in this blog, with this problem all over the internet, on many web sites.

a lot of women ranging from a woman in her 30's impersonating a teen male getting a teen girl so upset enough with vicious lies to where she (the teen) commited suicide.
A part of me says theres should be laws and people held accountable for this stuff........but with the internet being world wide it would be hard to hold ppl accountable..................but there is another part of me that wonders how a teen got to the point of committing suicide ...........where the hell were her parents............now don't jump my ass.....parents cant watch their kids all the time.............but i think a bit of monitoring what was going on ...........on the computer was needed.

The sad thing is ..........whether man or woman.......there is always going to be someone who wants to make trouble on websites.........maybe because the are bored or insecure.......and this makes them feel powerful..............or maybe because they just simply disagree with everyone..........the truth is...........if drama didn't sell so big............meaning EVERYONE reads it and/or comments on it............if it was just considered another boring blog.............there would be no trolls cause no one would even notice there was a troll there.....................but thats the nature of the beast...

This is how it works here..........one or more have a problem with one person........so people start blocking each other so only their opinions are put into a blog......than because the other (s) can't comment on blogs they write a blog........and back and forth and than other people jump in with their version of the problem followed by the ones of why can't we all get along..............followed by the hand slapping ignore the blogs................There is not a single person who can say they don't play a part in this because everyone does if by all they do is just reading the damn blogs.........makes the views go up...........but again thats the nature of the beast..............if you want things always happy and carefree..........with love and flowers and sunshine..........you should renounce all worldly goods and join the hari kristnas that are hanging out at the airports............................JMHO

My guy is a paid blogger in his spare time and has found the climate definitely more volatile over the last couple of years. There are a lot of bloggers out there that do not have a moral compass...which is something you really shouldn't be lacking if you're going to be blogging about other people. Google bombs have unfortunately become a part of the job...a part he has grown to hate. In addition, you have a lot of bloggers out there who plagiarize routinely and do not give credit where credit is due. It really creates a hostile environment at times...one that is not safe for kids who are not properly supervised by their parents.

When my son was still living at home, my rule was if I saw him scramble to change the screen when I walked into the room, he was doing something he shouldn't be doing and I kicked his butt off the computer. I was tough, but it kept him honest and safe.

Good blog...and very appropriate based on how crazy "blogland" has been this week.

Thanks!

"The sad thing is ..........whether man or woman.......there is always going to be someone who wants to make trouble on websites........."

Now, this comment is really funny, considering, if memory serves, it was YOU who started a separate blog for the express purpose of attacking me personally simply because I stated I didn't find DKW's "joke" funny and that I don't think that women should be the brunt of sexual jokes, etc.

In that blog, you called me a lesbian. (That it an outright LIE, and is defamatory in nature).

In that blog, you implied that I sit around and think about being with women sexually. (That is an outright LIE, and is defamatory in nature).

In that blog, you made several comments stating that I had written you emails suggesting things of a sexual nature. (That is an outright LIE, and is defamatory in nature).

Everything you said in that blog was libelous and, if its eventual outcome caused me financial damages or damages to my personal reputation, then I would have cause for a lawsuit. Famous people usually have more legal ground to stand on because everyone knows who they are. Certain statements made about a famous person can cause them to lose work and respect from their colleagues and from their fans, for instance, so it is very damaging and, therefore, definitely grounds for a lawsuit.

But just because no one here knows who I am and your comments aren't likely to cause me any reputable harm as far as my personal life goes, people on this website may read your comments and take them as fact, because that's how you've presented them. And they're NOT fact; every single thing you've said is an outright LIE.

Not only that, for you to have called me that and to have made those comments make no sense whatsoever. I'm a lesbian because I don't think women should be the brunt of sexual jokes? Tell me how the HELL you arrive at that absurd conclusion based on what I said?

I say that women should be treated with respect and should conduct themselves with dignity and with a modicum of pride and decency and all of you launch VICIOUS personal attacks against me because I stated that.

Oh, yeah...that shows the ability to present logic, rational rebuttal, all right.

If I get attacked like that for sticking up for women, what would you do if I put women down? Yes, I DO think women who strip, or fuck for a living are SKANKS. I think they are perpetuating the myth that we are merely holes in which for a man to ejaculate. I think they do DECENT women a disservice by engaging in such practices. But I NEVER once singled out any of you individually. What's that expression about "Thou doest protesteth too much"?

If my comments angers you to the point they obviously do, perhaps you need to do some soul searching. If you think that women being objectified or putting themselves in a position of being objectified is so "right," then you wouldn't be so G.D. defensive about it!

Your comments anger me, hurt me and, more than anything else BAFFLE me, because they are not in any manner contextual to mine, but have you noticed that, regardless of what you say to or about me, regardless of how many of you gang up on me, that that STILL does not make me back down from my opinions?

It never has worked, and it never will.

I have the RIGHT to think for myself and to present those thoughts in these blogs just as much as you do. And I have the RIGHT to do so without being called a fucking lesbian, or any other of the many LIES that have been stated about me.

No i didn't.........thats your term ...............you came up with that all on your own..................but while we are on that subject..........why does that bother you so much..............and you know for someone who is all for protecting women against the evilness of the world......you are pretty nasty in the name calling when it comes to lesbians........

you implied that I sit around and think about being with women sexually.
Implied being the key word...........and I didn't even really do that in my blog.......I just asked you if you wanted to get honest with yourself about how you felt about woemn...........

Well I am sure being on AMD wouldn't relly help your credibility..........but hey give your attorney a call......let me know when you get laughed at cause you will..........And being a legend in your own mind really doesn't make you famous...................OH look Elvis is on AMD too.........you two should talk......

Yes you do...........and let me tell you a thing or two.......I have the write to put in blogs what I want to .............especially when I didn't actually call you anything......but honey bring it on...........my attorney really loves stupids lawsuits..............and since i do keep a copy of EVERYTHING you say in the blogs TO EVERYONE........i wonder how that will help when the judge sees how you say your sticking up for women and than call them nasty vulgar names...........not going to look to pretty for you girlfriend..........

But if you think I called you a lesbian..........I AM TRULY SORRY...........I would never insult lesbians like that.

No i didn't.........thats your term ...............you came up with that all on your own...

No, I don't believe I coined the term "Lesbian," and even if you didn't come right out and say the word, you made it clear you were accusing me of being one.

****

...............but while we are on that subject..........why does that bother you so much..............and you know for someone who is all for protecting women against the evilness of the world......you are pretty nasty in the name calling when it comes to lesbians........

Because I'm NOT a lesbian! If I WAS one, that'd be a different story. And if someone IS a lesbian, more power to 'em, but I take offense, as a heterosexual woman, to being called one. The thought of having my face buried in some woman's crotch is nauseating to me. It'd be like admonishing a straight man that he should have no qualms about being called gay or that the thought of having a cock shoved up his ass should bother him. I'mNOT a lesbian, and you had/have no right to even SUGGEST that I am.

****

you implied that I sit around and think about being with women sexually.

Implied being the key word...........and I didn't even really do that in my blog.......I just asked you if you wanted to get honest with yourself about how you felt about woemn...........

Yes, you most certainly DID do that, and more. You directly, very STRONGLY implied it, to the point of almost outright accusation. And you just proved that by stating just now if I wanted to "get honest with myself about how I felt about women." You know what? I KNOW how I feel about women. Who the fuck are YOU to make a determination of how I feel about women??? I have women friends, I love women as friends, I have respect for women who have respect for themselves and each other, but I'm not a fucking dyke.

Well I am sure being on AMD wouldn't relly help your credibility..........but hey give your attorney a call......let me know when you get laughed at cause you will..........And being a legend in your own mind really doesn't make you famous...................OH look Elvis is on AMD too.........you two should talk......

What does being on AMD have to do with anything? You think youre exempt from prosecution from libelous remarks simply because you're on a website that allows all kinds of filthy and degrading comments, particularly about women?

Well, you're not. Be that as it may, I already stated that because I'm not famous there would be little grounds for a lawsuit. I'd have to prove actual damages. And I also added that, just because it wouldn't be grounds for a suit, still doesn't give you the right to accuse me of it. And you also DID say I wrote you emails of a sexual nature, and that is an outright LIE. you don't have the RIGHT to accuse people of being what they're not, and of lying and saying they made statements they didn't make.

Yes you do...........and let me tell you a thing or two.......I have the write to put in blogs what I want to .............especially when I didn't actually call you anything......but honey bring it on...........my attorney really loves stupids lawsuits

LOL...your attorney loves stupid lawsuits? Have you been sued for libel before? LOL....

Let me explain something to you. You DONT have the right to call me a lesbian, whether directly or indirectly, and you DONT have the right to state that I made sexual comments to you when i did nothing of the kind.

..............and since i do keep a copy of EVERYTHING you say in the blogs TO EVERYONE........i wonder how that will help when the judge sees how you say your sticking up for women and than call them nasty vulgar names...........not going to look to pretty for you girlfriend..........

Let's get another thing straight. I'm not your girlfriend. Never would be. I call women who act nasty and vulgar and who attack me for simply having an opinion that differ from mine nasty and vulgar names. None of that would be an issue in court, with regard to a defamation lawsuit. Calling you, for instance, a bitch, which is what you are.. a troublemaking bitch, because YOU'RE the one who started the initial attack blog ... is not libelous in nature. Referring to a woman as a bitch is making reference to her behavior.

Calling me a lesbian, however, directly or indirectly, is stating outright that my sexual orientation and preference is that I prefer women. If nothing else, that could cause lesbians on this site to start coming on tome, directly because they got the impression I was gay from what you said. Which would all be find and dandy if I WERE one, but I'm NOT, so I don't want anyone thinking that I am. It'd be on fucking different if you called me a pedophile, or a molester, or any other lie you made up about me.

Now, my calling you a bitch isn't likely to damage or harm you in any way. You calling me a lesbian, however, isn't like saying I'm a bitch; it's stating that I prefer being with women sexually, and I do not. That is a libelous statement. It is an outright LIE. Just like you stating that I made sexual comments to you in emails is an outright LIE. And you KNOW they are lies. I don't want anyone here thinking I'm a lesbian, and I'll thank you to stop calling me one, and to stop making disgusting comments about how I want to lick a woman or anything of the kind, because nothing could be further from the truth. You don't have the RIGHT to LIE about anyone, no matter how much their opinion or the way they present it intimidates you. How'd you like it if I called you a child abuser just because you had an opinion I didn't agree with? What? Youre NOT a child abuser? Well, I'm no fucking LESBIAN, either. Get it?

Oh, I'm quite SURE you keep all comments made...there are certain people here who are OBSESSED with doing that, so that they have, in their minds, extra ammunition with which to attack their victims.

But if you think I called you a lesbian..........I AM TRULY SORRY...........I would never insult lesbians like that.

I don't THINK you did; I KNOW you did. And even if you didn't use the term "lesbian" itself, you not only did that, but you also stated that I wrote sexually suggestive emails to you. You LIED about me. You made up things about me which are simply not TRUE.

And all because I stated that I don't think women should be made the brunt of sexual jokes!
