Well last night I was watching the news. There was a segment stating that they (the schools) are not going to teach kids how to write in cursive anymore They will teach them to read it and to write their name and that is it! WTF!!

Does that mean when we (our ages) are old the younger people (in their 30's-40's) will no longer be able to write without a computer?? I mean seriously that is bad IMO Its bad enough kids don't have imagination anymore, they don't play outside but now they aren't going to learn the proper way of communication?? Or am I just an old bitch??

First, I need to state that my weakest physical gift is in the area of dexterity. My penmanship has not progressed since the third or fourth grade. Outside of my signature, everything I write is printed. I cannot remember the last time I wrote anything out in cursive. It is safe to say it has been decades.

I agree with ya there!! When i was a kid, we learned cursive writing and wrote thank you notes for Christmas and birthday gifts. Even now, I'll write a letter. The computer, in my opinion, has distanced us from people on one hand, and yet has brought us together on the other. I've met some great people through the computer, that I never would have before. But I believe that has "de-humanized" us to an extent.

Good blog!

This spring I was one of around 100 people that had to assess the essays for seventh graders in Texas for a statewide battery of tests, There was about 300,000 essays. I read about 200 essays a day for eight weeks. Now there may be one or two I am not remembering but I do not recall any that were written in cursive.

What it means is the next generations will not be able to read journals, hand-penned letters and inscriptions in books without a special "handwriting reader"

To be honest, I use to have really beautiful handwriting and now because of lack of use ...........it sucks. I also use to be a great speller but because of spell check I no longer have to be. I use to be able to add large numbers in my head fast..........but because of calculators I no longer have too. Are you seeing a pattern here? Pretty soon schools will just have to teach computers and we will no longer need schools. I think its very important to continue teaching cursive......and if schools quit teaching it I will teach my grandchildren........

I have boxes of my mother's writings and journals.......its all in cursive..........how will my grandchildren ever get to know who their great grandma was if they can't read what she wrote...........although some of her stuff is typewritten on the most part its all in cursive.

They will teach them to read it

Do note that what she posted indicates they will still be taught to read cursive.

Yes WOW they said they will teach them to read it, but they will still lose so much if they can't write it. Look what we lost with Calligraphy! Such a beautiful style of writing and I don't think many know how, and the younger generation probably don't even know what it is or was. That is our past and oh hell you know what I'm saying!

Nahh...I happen to agree with you. Computers crash and fail and all of a sudden casheirs can't count change. Writing by hand takes time and everyone is in a hurry.

I just hope it does not come to the day when the next generation cannot read a hand written word. Now that will be truly sad.

They can't spell or construct a meaningful sentence (as a generalization) so why should they need to be able to write either?

Learning to write Cursive is a use for the brain matter that makes you think in a long, congruent way. It's problem solving at it's finest, and in a way, art work. I don't care if your handwriting is beautiful or not, learning to write cursive and practicing taught me concentration, patients, and how to deal with my frustrations. I still don't have beautiful handwriting, most people say they can't read it at all, but It should be taught, even for the ART sake of it.

I've noticed over the years that the schools are actually teaching less and less.. sending things home for the parents to teach the kids. Yes, seriously. We are all adults who know how.. why not offer to teach youngsters this dying art?

unfortunatly I can see in the not too distance future that we won't even need schools either cos there will be no reason why kids can't learn everything online from home, so why would they need to even venture out to a school building for ?

Well i know the school my kids go to teaches it...my son is horrid at it rofl....but yes i agree you should see the new alphabet now they changed the letters on some & it looks horrible & is much harder to write. It is something that kids don't feel they need to learn because that's what they have computers for....
