No, I am not advocating XXX Swinging, although...a Vulcan mind-meld with Aftershox, theSkwirl, lintroller, and Somnium would be the best sex education you could ever receive. However, I wouldn't hook-up with them simultaneously because my wee brain would explode and you'd all have a heckuva time cleaning the backside of your computer screen... YUCK!

What I am saying is whenever I'm stuck, blocked or on empty trying to conjure a post to AMD... I go swing. Yep, that's right, I head outside and hop in my swing. I live in a wonderful place... surrounded by Live Oak trees, natural vegetation, wildlife and great views. It's a park-like setting where I have the perfect perch to sit upon. My swing is located down a flight of stairs and a few steps the left... it's the old fashioned kind surrounded by a huge sand box. When you jump out of the swing you are guaranteed a safe landing... well, most of the time!

Swinging takes me back to my childhood, it encourages me to play, be curious and see the world through fresh eyes. A few days ago I was in a rut, so I headed out to my swing, but this time I grabbed my camera. I placed the camera strap around my neck just before kicking-off. While I was swinging, I shot randomly not caring about what or whether I was capturing anything. It was the act of allowing the camera to capture whatever it was pointing at without any concern as to subject, quality or anything else... it was serendipitous and whatever revealed itself would be a surprise!

What fabulous fun to swing with abandon... to lean back watching the sun dance on the leaves... to feel the wind blowing through my hair... to smile and laugh with the delight of it all. After swinging for about twenty minutes (it's good exercise too) my head was clear and I was ready to go back inside and hit the keyboard once again.

Then I hooked my camera to my computer and downloaded the images. If I could post photos within this blog I would. Alas, AMD doesn't allow it, so you'll have to use your imagination to "see" the results.

So when you are in a rut, blocked or just need some fun... go swing. Your readers will thank you.

Happy Swinging on AMD!

Maybe not in the blogs, but you could on your profile. They can always be deleted later if you wanted to.

Now that I feel inspired, I wish I could find a swing. I used to love swinging as high as I could, and then jump off. What a rush!!! My Mom used to always yell at me for doing that. Said someday I would get hurt. Never did. I did fall out of a tree once, and that hurt like hell..but I was back up the same tree later on. Wipe outs on my bike...too numerous to count. But never fell off a swing.

Your backyard sounds so pastoral. It is nice to look out and see a natural view instead of an alley or another building. It has taken quite a few years but in my back yard the trees, bushes, hedges and vines have just about obscured all of the other houses.

You are correct concerning posting photos to a profile. However, the problem there is waiting for AMD to approve the images... by the time they do that the blog is 7 - 10 days old! Thanks.

Hmmm... I dunno why but a double decker swing comes to mind! For some reason, my tree's branches seem to sweep upwards so, the only way I could attach a swing to a branch, would be with unequal lengths of rope or chain! But you know... that get's into trying to even up legs on a chair with a hand saw- until the swing is out of reach- kinda thing!

Guess I'm out of luck, unless I buy a swing set! Nice idea though!

Nice blog too Dione! A kudo for you!

When I moved in with my late husband, he had this big wooden swing..........and if Gary and I got into an argument............I would go set on the swing until I was ready to discuss something without getting pissed...............he called it my pouting swing...... .......of all the stuff I had to leave behind in Ohio I miss it the most..

I used a rocker for my pouting moments. whether it's a swing or rocker, it's good to have a place to ponder things.
I'm gonna go run out to Home Depot & get a swing.
Get the industrial strength supplies... it makes singing for adults much more fun!

I think my blood pressure went down as I read this... what a pleasant scene. Good timing, as my heart rate was increasing at the thought of a vulcan mind-meld.

I like the concept of the swing as a portal to spontaneity, without which our lives would be very dull indeed. I can similarly cultivate my imagination through window-staring, cloud-watching, or just general spacing out. My wife especially appreciates the latter when she's in the middle of making a critically important point.

from one of softie's blogs:

And I think Dione's writing ability doesn't get the attention it deserves.

...they tend to routinely be the blogs where I don't really have anything on topic that I wanted to say, so I end up not commenting, then later I'm like, "Damn! I really meant to just drop a comment saying, 'Awesome writing, I really enjoyed reading that.' But completely forgot to."

Ever have that problem?

Thanks for the relaxing image, especially after an insomniac night.

I love to swing, haven't done that in probably 2 or 3 years though.
It clears my mind and if I'm in a sour mood it seems to improve it.
I know where I'm going sometime really soon............

How wonderfully mundane! Swinging. Mmmmm.

Vulcan mind melds. Oh my! In the Star Trek pre-quel series Enterprise, mind-melds were illegal and was considered mental form of rape.

Another way to get ideas is just seeking out a place that has variety. Agrocery store, a library, a flea market,, your basement clutter. Juxtaposing the "need" for an idea agains a backdrop of different things can cause word associations that lead you down a path of serendipity and perhaps the answer you seek.
