I'm sure everyones heard this news story for the past week now between these two, but I'm going to weigh in on it anyway since I haven't been on here all that mush as of late. I think Gates totally overreacted and caused this mess. He was so quick to play the race card. Having heard some background about each of these two and about what went down, along with the 911 tapes, I honestly feel that Gates is in fact a racist himself. Seems as though he has a chip on his shoulders like many blacks do in a way that people like him keeps racism alive and kicking. I have met many people like this, and I know there are still a lot of whites that are racist, but to me it seems like a higher percentage of blacks have chips on their shoulders and think that all whites are rotten and are racist and trying to hold their race down in our society. I know not all blacks are like this, but I certainly see very large numbers of them acting like whites owe them something. I don't agree with that mentality whatsoever. People want a colorblind society and I'm one of them. But these people who preach that seem to be the worst offenders of seeing race no matter what. As for Obama, hell, I don't like him. It's his politics and policies I hate. Bill Cosby was right, Obama should have kept his mouth shut when a Chicago news reporter asked him that stupid question about the Crowley/Gates situation. It was very stupid to involve himself in it.

So, who do you think was in the wrong?

I think it was Gates who overreacted and was way out of line. He should have done what he was told by the authorities to do! But he chose not to..

I guess they're all getting good and drunk at the white house about now.

There are some people that have a problem with authority. They show no respect for law enforcement officers today.

I believe Gates overreacted. He could have calmly told the officer, Crowley, that he was the homeowner, shown him his driver license and it would have been over with. Instead, he flew off the handle, made a scene and got himself arrested. And Obama sure didn't help it any by saying, "the police "acted stupidly.".

I think him trying to smooth it over is good, not too many Presidents that I know of have done anything like this.

Hopefully the matter is now settled and the country can focus on getting back on track with the economy. (not holding my breath on that either btw)

I agree; Gates overreacted. "Do you know who my BEST FRIEND is?!?" Sheesh!!!
(Um, quotation marks by me....)

If you can't make it on your own and are always a victim it was the cop.
If you are use to making it on your own and take responsibility for your actions it was Gates

Gates is certainly not the only black guy arrested for nothing. The only reason this indecent turned into a ridiculous media circus is because Gates is a Harvard professor, not just some ordinary Joe Schmoe. Racism? Probably not a factor here. Classism? You betcha!

As for Gates himself had been a racist, do you honestly think that he would have acted any differently had Crowley been black instead of white? Black cops have just as much of a bad reputation in the black community as white cops, especially in the Boston area, where police brutality against blacks (including by black cops) has been a problem for nearly a century now.

Now what I find truly disturbing is the beer selection:

Obama: Bud Light
Biden: Bucklers
Gates: Sam Adams Light
Crowley: Blue Moon

I think Obama is starting to make the same mistake Bush did and is taking this "Man of the people" shit way too far. I'm a broke-ass blue collar college student and even I don't drink that shit.

Yeah, I believe he would have acted differntly toward Crowley had Crowley been a black police officer.

Gates is certainly not the only black guy arrested for nothing.
He didn't get arrested for doing nothing. He was arrested outside of the house because Gates followed him outside screaming and yelling in public. That's disorderly conduct. And not only that, Gates brought Crowley's mother into this. There was no excuse for Gates bad behavior!

So you mean to tell me that if the police showed up at your doorstep and accused you of breaking into your own house, you'd be completely polite and passive? I'd be pissed. You'd be pissed, too. Doesn't matter what race you are, that's reason enough to yell at a cop. The worst part is, the cop arrested the guy AFTER seeing his ID and determining that he hadn't broken in.

"He's still here! Open and shut case, Johnson. I saw this once before when I was a rookie. Apparently, this nigger broke in and hung pictures of his family everywhere."

No, I wouldn't be pissed. I would probably be a nervous wreck trying to prove I lived there. But I would also know that I wouldn't be arrested when I showed proof to the officer. I would also be very thankful that someone was watching out over my house for me while I was away. I know I wouldn't have been standing out there like a total dumbass yelling and screaming at an officer for checking into this 911 call. He got arrested because of that disorderly conduct!

Welcome to our new litigious society. Time was, you actually had to do something disorderly. Crowley was using it as a bullshit excuse because after royally pissing Gates off, Gates hurt Crowley's sensitive little feelerz. If Gates had yelled like that at his neighbor, and the neighbor called the cops, Crowley would have told Gates to chill out and then left, assuming the police would have even bothered to send someone. But because it was directed at Crowley himself, he arrested Gates because the things he was saying were damaging to Crowley's emotional well-being. What kind of man is that?

i dont know how obama got into all this?

Obama is being a media whore because the media pimps are making a huge fuss about this simply because this time the victim was a well-to-do Ivy-leaguer. Troy Davis, in a similar case of mistaken identity, is sitting on death row awaiting execution. Not on CNN or Fox, therefore he doesn't get invited to the White House for a beer.

JMHO. both Gates and Obama did not really know what was going on and
it's so easy in todays world for these types to play the Race Card.
(these types = people with chips on their shoulder)
From what I understand, Gates did not 'go off' on the Black Cop, but really
went nutters on the White one......even doing something along the lines of
'yo mamma' insults. That is pretty much crossing the line, and should get
anyone arrested, from a Black Liberal to some White Trash on COPS.
THAT is racist, and anyone that defends that type of behavior is also racist.

Green Thangy for you.

The news media are the ones that really overreacted turning a trivial local event into a Nationwide we're-all-still-racists fest and of course a business opportunity for all news outlets.

Must not have been anything important going on and they have got to sell news whether it happens or not, have to pay their bills too after all.

I think both parties acted improperly and had attitudes that led to escalation. I think that Obama can find something more important to do than have a beer with those two. And yes, I am sick of hearing about it.

I agree with Bruce, both could have handled it better. First of all Gates should have calmed down and realized why the police were there in the first place. Second, Crowley should have seen how pissed Gates was and just said screw it, I'm out of here. The guys is acting like a jack ass but he is at his own home and I'm just going to walk away.

Without being there to actually witness what was going on, everything is pure speculation. And even if I were there, my opinion of the events would be based on my speculation and my personal attitude toward the whole race issue and what have you.

Having said that, my opinion is that Gates, being black, surely has been the target of racial profiling at least once in his life...I suspect even more. He was probably tired from traveling, and all he wanted to do was get inside and relax, and when he couldn't get in, and ended up having to break in, he was already pissed off. I know I would be. Then, seeing the police drive up, that probably pissed him off even more, thinking, gee, now someone's gone and called the cops.

At this point, who knows what triggered him to react the way he did to the cops? Who knows what they said? Maybe they didn't say anything "wrong," or maybe they did. From that point, though, the fuse was lit, and it obviously escalated to the point that he got arrested.

I completely understand the Gates' point of view, and why he may have reacted like he did, but at the same time, I understand the officers' decision in arresting him, too. Now, personally, I probably woldn't have gone that far but how do we know that they gave him a chance to calm down, but he just kept it going?

On the one hand, I'd say they should have let him go, and on the other hand, I say they were justified in arresting him. To form any specific opinion on that is impossible without having been there to witness it.

The black sergeant (?) who was on the scene, however, stated Gates was in the wrong. Of course, a lot of people would say he isn't black, and that Crowley isn't white, in that situation, that they're both blue.

Anyway, who cares? Can't we all just get along???
