Some interesting patriotic info-
•Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal but was outvoted when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson chose the bald eagle.
•Over an estimated 150 million hot dogs will be consumed today. That's roughly 1 dog for every two people in the U.S.
•Over $211 million has been spent on the importation of fireworks from China
•Oddly, the majority of the nation's flags and patriotic paraphernalia in relation to the 4th of July is produced in China. Nearly $349 million dollars are used each year to import in the flags, banners, decorations, and emblems.
•The first 4th of July party held at the White House was in 1801.
•The words Under God were not added to the Pledge of Allegiance until the year 1954. •More than 74 million Americans will bbq today. If you join them, check out FitSugar's healthy bbq round up.
•The 4th of July was not declared a national holiday until 1941.
•The national anthem is actually set to the tune of an old English drinking song called To Anacreon in Heaven
•The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.
PATRIOTIC PLACES
Number of places nationwide with "liberty" in their name. The most populous one is Liberty, Missouri (26,232). Iowa has more of these places than any other state: four (Libertyville, New Liberty, North Liberty and West Liberty).
Eleven places have "independence" in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents.
Five places adopted the name "freedom." Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these.
There is one place named "patriot" — Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202.
And what could be more fitting than spending the day in a place called "America"? There are five such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents.
COOKING OUT
There's a 1-in-6 chance the beef on your backyard grill came from Texas. The Lone Star State is the leader in the production of cattle and calves.
The chicken on your barbecue grill probably came from one of the top broiler-producing states: Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, North Carolina and Mississippi. The lettuce in your salad or on your hamburger probably was grown in California, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of USA lettuce production.
Fresh tomatoes in your salad most likely came from Florida or California, which, combined, produced more than two-thirds of U.S. tomatoes. The ketchup on your hamburger or hot dog probably came from California, which accounted for 95 percent of processed tomato production last year.
As to potato salad or potato chips or fries, Idaho and Washington produces about one-half of the nation's spuds.
For dessert, six states — California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Arizona and Indiana — combined to produce about 80 percent of watermelons last year.
YUM!
Hope everyone has a fabulous day! Remember that fireworks are a fire hazard and scare animals, so be careful! Also, please don't drink and drive!

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national animal I think a huge turkey emblem, would have been quite appropriate hanging on a wall during Congressional sessions- especially these days! Just say'n!!
The bald eagle is certainly the more appropriate choice for our country!
Good blog there Sunshine!
HAVE A SAFE & HAPPY 4th Y'ALL!!

Give me a good old backyard grown, Missouri melon anytime!!!!!!!!!!

Melons...mmm....
Best I have ever had come from mason county Illinois. Called Black Diamonds, they are solid black. The soil in mason county is mostly black rich dirt with a small amount of sand. Deep DEEP red center and devilishly rich without being TOO sweet. I have ridden with people a hundred miles just to pick one up. They are found in old timey roadside vegetable stands all along the county highways.
Happy Holidays (early )
