I don't know if anyone can say that one was bigger than the other, it was a different era. So if you said MJ sold more Albums/cds, more people have the equipment to play it now than during the Elvis era. I myself, would never say that one is bigger than the other, my personal choice would be Elvis, but that is just my personal choice. I liked some of MJ music.................but not as much as Elvis's..........

Last year the Elvis franchise made only $55 million. A major portion of tourism in the city of Memphis is generated by Graceland and the memory of Elvis. If Michael had not self-destructed he might have had a chance, but no way. And the internal fighting will destroy the rest of his family. He doesn't have anyone like Priscilla who will preserve his memory.
The King is dead, long live the King.

Both icons of completely different music genres. Personally I would call that apples and oranges.
Elvis died on Aug 16th, 1977, yet still has a massive following and graveside ritual yearly, so if they want to compare them by memorial, they have about 32 years to wait.
When elvis died, they had no internet and media coverage was rather limited. The shock was still felt around the world, however. Again, apples and oranges.

I remember when Elvis passed .. I was reading it on television during the Munsters show at my friends house. It was a big mistake to let her know. I should have waited until the show was over.

Like DKW to different kinds of music, styles, etc.. And your right there isn't anyone to take care of MJ's affairs. Prisilla did an awesome job of maintaing things, again different. Did you see where his parents are fighting to gain control of his estate?? And how could his parents get his children when his dad was such a jerk to him??? I just don't get it.

I would have to say Elvis. Elvis was the king of whatever music he wanted to do whether it was rock, country, or gospel.

MJ will become bigger than Elvis. They are already talking about it on the news. His songs alone are worth to be over a billion dollars and still going up. He still owns half of Neverland Ranch, which is worth 10 times the amount he paid for it. By the time that new video comes out showing him during rehearsal the last week before his death his sales will sky rocket. Granted their were no cd's or anything during Elvis time but his records were not slod out at stores all over the country like MJ.

I have to disagree with you.
Elvis's estate generates millions yearly, even this many years after his death. 49 million in 2007. Source
As for albums not selling out.....? I did a little looking, and found this: [QUOTE]to date Elvis has charted 153 singles on the Billboard Top Pop Singles chart and has charted 104 albums as of 2000 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. RCA has stated that every single and album released by Elvis has gone at least gold and many were platinum and multi platinum. Some were not awarded because RCA did not request certification at the time. BMG, has done an outstanding job of going back and getting his records certified by checking sales figures. All sale figures are not available particularly the millions that were sold following his death in 1977 and continuing until BMG took over RCA a few years later. But they do say it is safe to say he sold over a billion records in his career.
It is not that records were not kept better. Records were not kept at all. Reason is that in 1972 Elvis needed some quick cash so he had the Col. sell his entire record catalog to RCA. The Col. got half the money and Elvis got half. This meant that RCA did not have to pay Elvis royalties on his records so prior the date of the 1972 buyout. GE owned RCA then and after Elvis died his sales on records were hot for the next 6 months at least. A lot of inquiries were made as to Elvis's total record sales. The Col told RCA not to release the figures. Since they owned the royalties they didn't bother to keep records of his sales prior to 1972. Billboard did estimate that Elvis was selling 200 million records per month and that went on for a good 6 months. So you can figure Elvis did not and will never get credit for approx. 1200 million records sold. The Elvis Estate and RCA did not have a good relationship during that period up to when BMG bought RCA. When BMG was made aware of lost record sales and lack of certified records that he deserved, BMG had the RIAA certify all records that existed on Elvis to get him awarded as much as possible for what he had earned. That resulted in many more certifications for Elvis but he will never be recognized for roughly those 1200 million records mentioned above where records were never kept.
And yes, that's WITHOUT any internet. 3 channel TV and mostly AM radio.
A gold record means more than 500 thousand. A platinum means that a song has sold 1 million copies. And Multi-Platinum means 2 million or more. Many do not know there is also a Diamond classification, indicating 10 million or more. But due to the recordkeeping he was denied that status. A summary list of his sales can be found below, and many still state he is the top record seller of all time.

Elvis because without him there would be no MJ or most of the pop singers of today. He changed music at a time when there was nothing else like him out there. They don't call him the King for nothing. JMO

They were both really good at what they did. And they both changed the face of music and the lives of many.. It's a shame that either of them died at such an early age or the way they did.....

I'm going to have to say Michael Jackson for a number of reasons. But one of those reasons would be that I'm partial to him because I started liking his music and keeping up with him when I was 16. He's part of the generation I watched when I was young.
