This isn't a joke....Seriously.
My Mom & Dad were out and about on a Saturday shopping around. Well, they had passed an empty car on the side of the road. Shortly after, they see this man walking with a gas can.
My Mom asks my Dad if they should stop. He figured it couldn't hurt.... They saw the car on the side of the road, right? Just gotta get this guy to a gas station & back, right?
So, they pick him up & he gets in and my parents ask where he wants to go & he tells them "Just up ahead a little ways." They notice he isn't the cleanest guy in the world. He stinks a little & of course, carrying a gas can, he reeks of gas too!
My parents keep driving and asked him again where he wanted to be dropped off at. He replies again "Just up ahead a little bit."
My parents realize they are about 12 miles past where they originally picked him up. At this point, they say they can't go any further. That they were being nice & trying to help him out. But now, this was outta their way. He kindly got out.
Do you think this is a new scam by bums?? Carrying a gas can around just to get a ride?? I admit, it isn't a bad idea.......Cheap way to get to work!!!
Anybody wanna fuck??

No, just a random weird guy in weird circumstances. Nothing organized. He probably needed to get closer to his people to possibly help him. It isn't like he tried a car jacking or robbery. The post seems a bit paranoid to me, Megan.

I am not so sure. These ideas tend to spread.
I remember warning my daughter not to be helpful to strangers asking for directions, or asking help to find a puppy dog.
Puppy dogs that don't exist. Gas cans for cars that don;t exist. They are both lies used to trick us, to take advantage of our need to be helpful.
This guy was harmless, the next scammer carrying an empty gas can might not be. And next time it could even be a helpless woman carrying a gas can, luring an unsuspecting citizen to stop while her accomplices jump out of the bushes to car-jack you.
Paranoia? Perhaps. I would rather be paranoid and safe than gullible and suffer the consequences.
One can always make a phone call with doors locked to help out a stranger. Cell phones are a God send.

You know this is why you don't see people helping others much anymore. It's not that they wouldn't help, it's a matter of not knowing who's who. They would rather be safe than sorry. So when I'm in need & ones just pass me by I think about that. Wether or not the guy was a scam, criminal, a good old boy, or whatever your parents did the right thing by dropping him off because he never gave a definite answer. Saying just ahead a little ways for someone carrying a gas can walking away from an empty vehicle would make you believe he wants to get gas so his answer should have been a gas station.

I think your parents are sweet, but probably just got lucky. It isn't a good idea to pick up strangers. At best stop and ask if you can call someone for them, but don't do it if you are alone and not loaded...gun on person is what I mean. I wonder why they asked him where he wanted to be dropped off? I think they should have just taken him to a gas station and left it at that. JMHO.

Could be...but on the other hand, who would go to work smelling like b/o and the smell of gasoline? But then, anything is possible with people these days...

Hmm...not sure. I would never pick up a stranger unless they were bleeding perfusely and looked like they needed to be rushed to a hospital. Otherwise, sorry...they are on their own! I just don't trust people period. You just never know. I like the cell phone idea.
