Very early this morning I received an email from a young man who shall remain nameless. Normally I ignore contact from the 20 something set, but this one stood out so to speak.

Here is his question: "Tell me....at 58 do you still feel the same need of having sex as 10... 20... 30... 40 years ago? I aske you this question coz I was wondering if as a man at 58 will I be able to get it up? What do you think?"

This was my response:

Here are a few things to consider which primarily revolve around health and lifestyle, but are not all inclusive.

Men who continue to smoke into their 40s (and beyond) will begin to notice their erections will not be as firm and/or will not be able to maintain an erection for as long as they did when younger.

Men who smoke and drink beyond moderation will experience the same erection issues as above.

Men with high blood pressure, even when controlled with medication, will notice the same conditions as with smokers and drinkers.

If a man smokes, drinks and has high blood pressure the problems with erection are increased.

If a man has had a heart attack or open heart surgery and is on medications his ability to function is affected. There are other health conditions such as diabetes that can affect a man's ability to become erect and/or maintain an erection (also covers premature ejaculation).

Drug use, whether illegal or controlled substances, can have similar affects as one ages. Being overweight may also affect a mans' performance.

Viagra, Cialas, etc. work well for many men, but with others it doesn't help enough when compared to the side effects.

None of these issues alone have to spell gloom and doom for your male-hood, but keeping it healthy, eating right, exercising even moderately, and avoiding drinking a six pack every night can go a long way in increasing longevity in your sexual life.

One more thing... even though I do not advocate promiscuity, I have noted that if a man is inactive sexually for extended periods of time his performance can be inhibited. So there's something to be said for use it or lose it - lol!

This brings up another health issue concerning promiscuity... if you have multiple partners please do not overlook the importance of condoms AND being tested regularly.

STDs can turn your life into a living hell... I've seen it! A very dear friend of mine slept with a young woman... she was as cute and funny as can be, but she had herpes (knew it and didn't tell him), slept with him repeatedly and then left when he noticed a problem. He lives with that "gift" to this day and it has affected every relationship he has had with women. He is single today... he is 52! So think about it before you decide to stick your wiener in a hole you don't know from whence it came (all puns intended)!

This is probably way more than you wanted to receive, but you asked.
Hope this helps. Have fun and be safe!

His response: ""Wow...........I'm gonna call you Wiki (pedia - if you don t mind) ... thanks for all this information!"

So, be careful what you ask for... especially from Wiki!

I realized the question, at least to me, had merit which was why I decided to respond. Would you have responded or would you have ignored it?

While the ENTIRE post had great merit, this part stood out for me because very few women seem to grasp the idea, let alone realize the validity of it. It's not just performance, as in "handling oneself and the situation", it's a question of sexual arousal and health!

The way I've been feeling lately with people, most likely would have been ignored. It seems when I do respond to unwanted email, they won't go away...like I'm their new best friend. I don't have the time or patience for it.

Well Wiki, LOL

I'm thinking Wiki would be more conducive for a male, if you get my drift but, I digress!

Anyway, if I were a female and have experienced the nasty mails here on AMD, I would probably think it was another cum-on. But- what do I know!

I do applaud you though, for taking the time to help him out and probably others!

Kewl blog!

I don't know if I would have responded but seems like you gave him and us alot of information. Not that I didn't know most of it already. Sorry to hear about your friend. STD's are not a good thing to get and a big reason why people should be careful. Pregnancy is also another reason if your not ready to be a parent. Spreading an STD on purpose or not telling a partner you have one is wrong and immoral. JMO or 1 cent.

The more you understand about yourself and your partner as a whole your experience in and out of bed will be enhanced.

Thanks!

Being a single male of 55, I can only say, "Amen". And add that of all the factors you mentioned, diabetes may be the most insidious. Symptomology is so mild that until the disease is advanced, many people don't realize that they are afflicted. And for many, diet and exercise can fix the problem. So get checked out, your partner will appreciate it.

I haven't encountered that problem, but that's just my experience which isn't to say whether it's typical or not. I don' receive too much unwanted emails, but the few I receive that are from slime buckets or scammers are immediately blocked.

I'm thinking Wiki would be more conducive for a male, if you get my drift
I get it - rofl!

I think the way I responded would either provide info I think he really wanted OR my lengthy response would put him off and he wouldn't come back. He returned to thank me which isn't the behavior of a cum-on.

I rarely receive nasty emails, so maybe I have more patience...

STDs scare me to death. When I found out my husband was sleeping around I was not thrilled about it, but a main concern was disease. He didn't "get" my anger about this possibility, but it later came back to bite him where it hurt. I got lucky not being infected by him, but I was tested regularly for years just to make sure!

Symptomology is so mild that until the disease is advanced, many people don't realize that they are afflicted.
It's one of the reasons diabetes is known as a silent killer!

Your new name Wiki, reminds me of something that cracked me up sometime last year! I was driving somewhere with my radido on my favorite local station and the talk show host was talking about how Wikipedia, may not always have correct information on it- only, he pronounced it: (i love it) Wy- ky- pedia! He did this 4 or 5 times, until his co-host reminded him, it's pronounced: Wi-ka-pedia! Just cracked me up for minutes after that! I really felt embarrassed for him!

Well... I thought it was funny!

I would have copy/pasted a URL to something appropriate. Too labor intensive to keyboard all of that in to somebody I don't know or expect to write to again.

Let me add that the active ingredient in Viagra is effective for 70 percent of men.

Well... I thought it was funny!

It is funnier than hell. It is kind of like over the weekend in a ceremony commemorating D Day when British PM Brown praised the courageous Americans that landed on Obama beach (as opposed to Omaha beach).

Granted, it is funny! However, the word is phonetically pronounced : wih-kee-PEE-dee-uh

I'm really trying not to be a smart ass, but sometimes it just pops out.

Excellent point! Yet it was faster for me to key it in than "research" info to copy/paste when it's already in my head. It's just different approaches, both of which work.

That was cute!!!!

The word "Wiki" is emblazoned in my mind. My daughter was doing a project at school & was only allowed to use Wikipedia. So, for 2 months I heard the word Wiki on a daily basis.........

Think I might name my next pet Wiki...........

You're right, I have benefited from my partner using it.

I would have copy/pasted a URL to something appropriate.
Your advice reflects the guidelines you've written for bloggers which is very good. My post probably would have benefited in the brevity department IF I had copy/pasted. This grasshopper continues to learn even it if slowly.

As an old guy with many of the afflictions posted, I concur
Several mature men have agreed privately, so you are not alone.

You may have opened your door....for this guy to worry the Hell out of ya!!! With some guys.. when a Woman responds to an Email..it opens the Door for them!
I must be very lucky because that hasn't happened yet (fingers and toes crossed).

I am not sure i would have responded to him but I liked you answer. Of course the answer is in general terms.........not all men who smoke, drink and have health problems have problems with erections in their later years........I imagine a large share.do.......but not all. Although I bet that young man will take better care of himself from now on.......

One thing I did want to mention:
Viagra, Cialas, etc. work well for many men, but with others it doesn't help enough when compared to the side effects.

These drugs are wonderful drugs for some men with erection problems. I caution any man who wants to use these drugs that has had any heart problems in the past to make sure that you tell your doctor about your heart problems prior to getting a prescription of Viagra. A patient that takes Nitro pills for heart problems mixing it with Viagra can be and most probably will be fatal........

Great blog........I think i have a kudo laying around here for ya.......
