In early September of 2008 I decided to visit my sister in Arkansas. As things usually happen with us, the plans for my visit evolved into something entirely different. My original plan of a simple, three day visit turned into a "Girl's Three Day Get-a-way" to Eureka Springs, Arkansas complete with a cottage equipped with a jacuzzi, floor to ceiling views overlooking Beaver Lake, a wrap-around deck and wild-life knocking at our door. We also decided to share our adventure with my niece... who just happens to love fishing as much as I do.

Off we go knowing two of us REALLY want to fish and one of us does not. The "does not fish" person is my sister. She is the Grand Dame of shoppers. We factored in a shopping expedition to keep everything on an equal playing field.

My niece and I decided fishing from the bank on the lake was not going to fulfill our fishing fantasies. We hired a fishing guide. He came highly recommended. He was not cheap, but he turned out to be worth it.

It was a dark, cold morning when we met our guide at the marina. We set off in the boat in the darkness, but soon the sun came up. We could see the vapor rising from the water, the sun's reflection sparkling on it and the misty landscape emerging beyond the water's edge. Before we knew it, it was time to bait up and do some serious fishing. It was slow going for awhile, then my niece caught a twelve pound Striper. That got our hearts pumping. A half hour later I had a strike and a nice fight on my hands. Eventually, I reeled in my catch–a four pound small mouth bass.

Our guide, smiling just shook his head saying, "do you know how long some men fish for a bass that size?" He went on to say, "I know men who have fished a lifetime and never caught a bass that size." I'm thinking, "OK it is a nice size fish, especially for a small mouth bass, but it isn't that big of a deal."

We continued to fish catching our fair share, but the first two fish of the day were the best! We were happy. On the way back to the marina, our guide spotted another guide with four fishermen in his boat. We waved and pulled up beside another. The men in the other boat were not happy... they hadn't caught anything all morning. Our guide asked us to show them our catch... so we did. There was utter silence. I'm afraid we made their day even worse than it was already. We didn't plan on showing off, but we were very proud!

Back at the marina, our guide suggested I might have my fish taxidermied for display. He said it would cost about $400.00. That's when it popped into my mind the reality of how much my fish really cost. Let's see... added all together it cost about $100 per pound for my four pound small mouth bass = $400. There wasn't any way I was going to pay that price to see it hang on my wall. My trophy is picture of me with my prize catch.

I love being on the water. Most weekends I'm in a canoe with my girlfriend. I usually do some fishing, she doesn't. After paddling for a while we have lunch on the shore and then sex in the woods. It's always great to catch some trout for lunch.

I have been on fishing trips like that, been in both boats so to speak.

Wordsofwit: I've been in both boats as well. Sometimes it isn't the catching that's the most important thing. Just being in a boat, canoe or kayak is enough to enjoy the peace and tranquility water brings.

OHT: Thanks for the greenie! Yes, the one in the pic is the small mouth I caught. I envy your 6# catch and pleased to hear you let her go. I didn't know until later how long it took them to grow. It's unlikely I'll ever eat another one again!

LYLT: Being on the water is one of my favorite things. I paddle around in my kayak as often as possible. Most of the time when fishing, I catch and release, but I grilled and ate this one.

Skirwl: I wish you could go fishing too! I'm ready to go again, but it isn't always easy to find a fishing buddy.
