Not quite correct. The basic tax rate in California effective 4/1/09 will be 8.25% Yes it's high but not 10%.
The majority of cities and counties add a special Use Tax to purchases to fund local project and there are 2 of those such cities where the final tax rate will be 10.25%. For the most part the tax rate runs between 8.5 - 9.25%
