Kids no longer have to stand for The Pledge of Allegiance?
Why is this happening? What makes this right? I'm a little disgusted
right now.....

What are your thoughts on this? Should they have to stand or not?

Here's some more....

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all

There Sunshine...I stood up..receited it with right hand held over my heart.

I hope this makes up a little for all the retardiness that they are showing young people.

This is a subject that sets my butt on fire!

What does the government expect from the future if our children are not raised to honor and respect the values that made this a great nation in the first place?

Look at the mess the country is in now & who the idiots are that are responsible.

We need to go back to standing for the The Pledge of Allegiance, not butchering The National Anthem, and learnig that there are consequences for our actions. A good old leather belt a few times never did I knew growing up anything but good.

What do we do next? Doze the entire nation flat & plant rice? Idiots.

So, your telling me your gonna go to China and not bow when they do and that they are gonna feel sorry and change their ways for you? I don't think so.
I am so tired of this country bending over backwards as to not offend the immigrants that come here. Just plain stinks. I don't see other countries changing their ways for a bunch of illegal Americans who want to live there and have become offended at the way they practice things.....

Good point Sun!!! I'm highly offended that we have to conform to them but they aren't conforming to our ways of life or our traditions in this great Country that wanted so badly to live in!!!

It'll never change though... that is a big ball rolling and it only rolls downhill!

Fucking people!

I remember as a child in school that there was one child in my class that didnt stand up for the pledge when the rest of us did. At first most of us looked at the other student as though he was a traitor to the rest of us...some nerve to live in this great country, and not show the same respect as the rest. But the teacher explained to us that some people because of religious or political reasons did not have to stand and recite the pledge. That didnt mean that they didnt believe that this country wasnt the greatest, it meant that because we understood that some of us had different beliefs and respected those who believed differently, that that was the reason this is a great country that other people wanted to come to and live. That was back in the 1950's. I would have thought that we would have evolved more during the years that followed. All of us here dont have the same view point as to what is sexually acceptable to ourselves. Yet we respect the others even though their desires are different than ours. Need I say more?

To me...

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands

I pledge to be an American. I pledge to follow the american way.

one Nation under God

I wrestled with this one awhile. Being I am Pagan. However, this is a very old pledge, done under yes, a form of christianity. You could also say it doesn't specify WHICH god...but since it is a pledge truly to me, to AMERICA itself, I say it anyway with pride and respect. Same as I bow my head at any prayers said at any kind of meeting. I call that respect.

Indivisible
ONE people. AMERICAN.

"Freedom" doesnt mean you can do whatever the fuck you want. The number one freedom that we have that the most people just dont understand is freedom of EXPRESSION. That you CAN profess different beliefs, different religions, different opinions, without repercussions from government or state. That's all. Being free does not give you the right to disrespect a pledge made when this country was born. If anyone was truly proud of being American, I see no reason whatsoever for them to not reaffirm their nationality. No reason at all. I suppose some think freedom means they can spit on, or burn that flag, too. Please do that in my presence. Because I would enjoy kicking your fucking ass. Why? Because I served this country of ours. Twice. And its no secret I hate my government, but I damn sure LOVE my country. Just a flag? I dont think so personally. That flag symbolizes the majority of our entire history in this country. Many have fought for and died for what it symbolizes.

with Liberty and Justice for all

Again, a solemn vow, penned a long time ago. And see the previous statement about how I feel governmentally. But hope for this should not die, that perhaps one day, things shall become like that. That the poor shall be helped, that the starving shall be fed, etc etc etc. As long as hope prevails, dreams shall not die...

That's my 50 cents.

I do agree that everyone has rights. No one should be forced to stand and say something they dont believe in. BUT!!!!! What about our rights? Why cant we stand and say our pledge? WHY must my kids have to sit and be quiet just because someone else does not like what is being said. You have the right not to participate. That is every Americans right. What give you the right to take mine or my childrens right to participate away? WHY are their rights more important than ours? Boy did I get preachy fast or what.

Exactly my point. People can have different points of view, and not be wrong. That is what makes this a GREAT country. That is also what makes Pervia special.

My last statement was in response to DKW. As far as doing away with the pledge in class....I think that people who want to participate should be allowed to do so, as long as they are the majority. So put it to a vote, that is democracy isnt it? I'm not trying to bash patriotism, just reaffirm the ideals this country was built on.

What IS Freedom? Would you say Liberty is a good comparison?

The writers & signers of the Declaration of Independence felt that ALL men had a God given right to freedom (liberty) . And yet, it wasn't "free". They had to fight for it. They had to earn it. People throughout recorded civilization and before have had to earn their freedoms. Rarely was it just given.

AND, just about the time any civilization starts taking it for granted, they usually end up losing it, or at the very least, having to fight for it all over again.

In some countries, as soon as you turn 18, you have to serve a few years in the military. Not just volunteers, no draft, but mandatory service.

Is getting off your duff for 30 seconds to recite the pledge to our country become too much to ask?????

I see this as a lack of respect. A lack of respect for the great country we are all so very fortunate to live in. A lack of repsect for yourself, your neighbor, your country and if choosen your personal beliefs.

The "Me Generation" has evolved producing more and more people who lack maturity and respect for others and have no sense of patriotism in the viens. The guy next door will no longer stand to defend you nor you him.

It's a very sad commentary on the moral decay of our country.

Great find Blue eyes now you know why "Red" was so beloved when he died around here you would have thought a president had died my dad never missed him on tv he was not only funny but a very soft spoken kind hearted man
My little boy(7) joined the cub scouts this year and before they do anything they always say the pledge and it was suprising when they first started that so many did not know it (but they do now!!)I loved the scouts when i was a kid but seeing my lil boy saluting and saying his pledge always makes me feel proud for him and brings back memories of what is good about this world

I belong to ABATE and HOG and we never start a meeting without the pledge.

And I liked Red Skelton also. I'm old enough to remember him.

As an athiest, I never liked saying the pledge of allegience. Besides the "one nation under god" part, I also hated saying it because it felt like the american version of "heil hitler". I do sometimes wish I could go back in time and forcefully sit it out back in grade school again. I don't need my schools forcing me to chose sides.

Once again American nationalists, in their efforts to promote patriotism, cross the line and shoot themselves in the foot. It started in '54 when, for no apparent reason other than to show we were better than the USSR (God did not exist in the Eastern Bloc in those days), Eisenhower wedged "Under God" into what was a perfectly acceptable pledge. This is what killed it. The First Amendment establishes an explicit separation between church and state. Therefore as long as "Under God" sticks the kids who don't believe in God shouldn't have to stand. Kudos to whatever kids first figured that one out. All too often we teach our kids all the ins and outs of flag-folding, pledge-swearing, and goose-stepping, but nobody knows a One-Nation-Under-God-Damned thing about our Constitution or the freedoms it guarantees. Except the illegal immigrants- they teach that stuff in Border-Hopping School.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself, just had to point out that this blog had nothing to do with immigration, yet in the comments you brought us back to that lovely topic... as if immigrants were the ones who told the kids not to stand, as opposed to American atheists, like Ben Franklin or Thomas Jefferson.

People have very strong feelings on this subject as evidenced in the comments; I do not. To participate or not should be up to the child's parent.

I certainly recall reciting the pledge in elementary school, but not junior high and beyond.

I have to agree. And the "under God" part should be omitted - I think that is the part that people have a big problem with.

Well from what I read, he is talking about people that don't believe in God. Not everybody does and some people are not Christians. When it comes to religion and school (at least public schools), they should not be mixed because not everyone has the same beliefs, as far as "God" is concerned.

I am on board with DMB on this. I may be out of bounds and mistaken, but I believe that it violates some religions like Jehova Witness to swear an allegiance to a government. But as I said, this is not an important issue for me.
