If you could afford a new car right now, what new car would you buy, and why? My mom's engine in her car blew (gasket) right before the new year, so I was out Friday car shopping with her for a new car. She decided that since the big 3 automakers are having some financial trouble and such, she had made up her mind that she was going to try something differnt and go with either a Toyota or a Honda. She really liked two that she saw. One was a Toyota red Corolla, and the other was a royal blue Honda RAV (a mini suv that looks like a stationwagon pumped up on steriods... ). Well, she went with the Honda rav. She seems to like it so far since I took her yesterday to go pick it up.

My question to all of you is, if your engine blew, would you go with a new or used car, what kind of car (and year if it was used), make and model, and why?

Btw, I really liked that red Toyota Corolla that I saw when I was up there.

Btw, my mom's old car is a 1997 Buick Century. About how much would it sell for without the engine? I mean, the car still looks pretty damn good, and even though the engine is the heart of the car, one can't just trash it or take it to the junk yard for $100-200. She has gotten a couple of people interested in buying her car so they can put a rebuilt engine in it and sell to make a profit. How much do you think she can get out of this?

If my engine blew..I'd be crying right now.

But, in fantasy life, if it blew, and I had the money...I'd be buying me a 2009 Grand Cherokee. I love the Grand Cherokee..they are awesome vehicles.

A lot of buggies (shopping carts) seem to be missing these days from stores. I'm thinking people are probably using those for transportation here in my area... If you know the people of Scioto county....

An Audi R8.
I'd love a Honda Crx clarity too, just cuz it's such a cool concept........

But I'm really an AUDI fan. Or a Mazda RX8.

I was driving a ThunderBird, but I hit head on with a Mustang, and all that was left was Horse shit and Feathers.

I am now looking for another car. I prefer a used one so I don't lose the depreciation value. It doesn't matter what kind, as long as it's in good shape and get over 30 miles to a gallon.

Hmmmm. I wonder if Borty is selling his Panty Mobil ?

GM's v-6's has shitty intake manifold gaskets........ but a bad gasket doesn't necessarily mean a ruined motor. Is the motor toast...... or is it just the gaskets?
And for those of you with buicks with a V-6 engine, you need to change the antifreeze about every 50,000 miles or it will turn acidic and eat the gaskets.

Yep, it's toast. They also said that the top part of the engine wasn't getting any oil. The light indicator never came or anything leading up to this. They said that it would probably cost $1,700 for a rebuilt engine for that car.

I just blew up the motor in my car (Mustang) so I'm gonna replace it with the motor out of my other car (Mustang) If I could buy any new car, I'd buy a Mustang (sense a theme here?) I got offered a shitload of money for the motor I built for my other car (Mustang) so I'll probly sell it to build a nice motor for 1 of my cars if not both

I'd buy the most expensive Honda - I'm on my 2nd one and my sibs all own one too. They're great cars, very dependable and get great gas mileage.

Hate to say it, but unless you want to take the time to part it out for a few additional bucks, you're probably better off junking it. I just got rid of a '97 Windstar delivery van with a bad head gasket (that still ran- sort of) for $125. Steel is down so the days of getting $400+ to scrap your car are over.

What would I get? Well, if I still had access to a van, probably something small like a '95 or '96 Nissan 240, an old Fiat 600 or Moggy Minor. If not, I'd get either a Caprice/Roadmaster wagon or Volvo 240 wagon.

As for a new cars, well, that's fantasyland for me for the next few years. But for starters, I'd still get something returned to the dealership with a few thousand miles on it- save some serious cash that way. I'd probably get a Pontiac G8 or VW R32. If I had a little more money, a BMW 135i.

There are a few out there I really like. Griz and I were looking at the new Saturn SUV's the other night. And I really like the Ford Escapes.
I do know it would definitely be an American made vehicle.. Positively from one of the big 3.

I would buy....(If I HAD Cash! ) An Hummer,.....a New one....at least an "08"....Loaded!!! Black/Silver and all Chromed out !!!
We make parts for Hummer...and Toyota....also!!!!
BTW.... a Head gasket would'nt cost all that much....I would fix the car then Sell it!!! She will make 10 times more money if it was running!!!
My 2 cents!

When I had some bucks comin my way I drove a Lexus SUV. It rode so smooth. I loved it cause it was the perfect height for me to slide right in the seat. I sold it and downsized to a Jetta. I loathed that car. Even new it was jerky. I sold that and downsized to nothing! After all that I should have banked the extra bucks and bought a used car with cash. I remember when I was paying off my student loans I said, I won't ever buy a car that costs more than my student loans. Well...how easily I forgot that statement. Now...I think I will just keep on hoofin it for a while. Any extra cash I come up with I use to keep my house intune!

Have you looked at the Saturn Aura? It's the same as the Caddy CTS, only
a few buckets less cash.
My brother got one with the 3.6L, 6 speed auto and ( I think ) 17" tire set up.
These cars have been "#1 best buy" for several years, and some versions of
it get upwards of 33 mpg.
You might look into them....REALLY good cars, reliable, good looks, LOTS of
creature comfort, and decent on fuel.

Thats called preventive maint.
I have had 3 Buicks - all with the V-6, and each went well over 200,000 without problems or rebuilds. When I junked my 88 Olds 88 because of tranny problems, the junk yard was going to keep the motor because there was no noise from it, even though it had 280,000 miles. Another Buick V-6, and they all averaged over 32 mpg highway.

I have a '96 Grand Cherokee with well over 200,000 and the rig is basically stock - and yes, it does see much off-road use and snow/ice. I did have to change the water pump and radiator at 192,000 though. I have and will always buy American.

My next rig is going to either be another Grand Cherokee or a 4 door Dodge Dakota 4X4.

Remember, the foreign companies don't want detroit to fail, then they will over here too.

Depends, does she want comfort and dependability or economy and dependability? My Taurus SEL, is fully loaded, gorgeous and gets pretty good mileage. I'm averaging 26 mpg in city and 28-29 mpg hwy. It's a nice looking car too with sunroof, leather interior, kickass sound system (factory stock!) and was a good reasonable price. The Ford Focus gets even better mileage and is 4 wheel drive, Escape gets reasonable mileage, is comfortable and affordable. I agree with Tammy too, tho, the Chevrolet Cobalt is a sporty little car and get 37 mpg! These days that makes them even more attractive!
