Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St.
Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With no thought of the dog outside filling their head.

And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
Knew he was cold, but didn't care about that.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Figuring the dog was free and into the trash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the luster of midday to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Santa Claus - his eyes full of tears.

He unchained the dog, once so lively and quick,
Last years Christmas present, now thin and sick.

More rapid than eagles he called the dogs name.

And the dog ran to him, despite all his pain;

Now, DASHER! Now, DANCER! Now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! On CUPID! On, DONNER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Lets find this dog a home where he'll be loved by all

I knew in an instant there would be no gifts this year,
For Santa Claus had made one thing quite clear,
The gift of a dog is not just for the season,
We had gotten the pup for all the wrong reasons.

In our haste to think of giving the kids a gift
There was one important thing that we missed.

A dog should be family, and cared for the same
You don't give a gift, then put it on a chain.

And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight,
You weren't given a gift! You were given a life!

*reaches down and pets my self motivated fuzzy foot warmers* Dogs and cats are not toys. We need to remember that when we take responsibility for one.. we do this for their life. I watch craigslist all the time and see one year old pets that "need work" "need more attention than I can give them." Well at least these people are trying to find pet parents who will be good for them. I can't tell you how many strays I took in and found homes for back home.. animals that were taken to the end of the road and dropped off because either the people didn't want the hassle of training them or whatever reason... it's depressing as hell and it's so confusing for an animal that only wants to love you and be loved by you. They don't ask much.. basic health care, food, water, a warm place to sleep..pet them as often as you can.. that's all they want.. and in return they will give you every tiny little corner of their hearts.

Just like children, pets have to look to you for their care and their love. I'm all for children getting pets... but again, you have to take responsibility and make sure the children keep up their end of the bargain as well. Teach them to be responsible pet parents.

And for fucks sakes.. get your pets.. and maybe your kids.. spayed or neutered.

Some people do the same thing with kids....please don't have children if you won't or can't look after them.

Just one of many news stories about the rising rate of pet abandonment by people who feel they can no longer afford to take care of their pets.

Abandoned pets

I can't give you all the kudos I want to for this blog but I'll give you what they allow and know in my heart it is multiplied many times over.

Asnet left a site to go to...I can't. There is a commercial on t.v. about pets with a song that plays while they show all these animals...most in good health and a couple not so good. I cannot watch it...it tears my heart out.

I no longer go in pet shops....I want them ALL.

We are in a terrible deep freeze right now and I can't vision all the pets left to fend for themselves in this horrible weather...it crushes my heart and makes me feel sick to my stomach.

I look at my 2 little fuzzy girls and I know I'd guard them with my life. Some people would think that extreme...that is their problem. I told someone just today that if my electricity went off I would stay right here with them...we'd make it somehow but I'd not ever abandon them for anything.

Thanks for posting this Sammy.....

There are too many people who some how forget that pets have needs and feelings. Just like people. But to so many it's just a cute furry little thing to keep a child happy or occupied..... until they grow tired of them or their attention is somewhere else..
Just because a child likes pets, doesn't mean they are responsible enough to take care of them. But the same can also be said about some adults.

Good blog Sam....Good point.

Damn right!!!!!!!!! I could NEVER do that to my dogs! They're my "babies". Sure, they may drive me crazy once in a while, but, I love them no matter what. I drives me nuts to see dogs out on chains looking lonely and starving for attention. Makes me want to cry.

I've got 3 kittens here I rescued back in September, I'm still trying to find good homes for them.

Oh yeah..here's my taxes Prez!
