We have a similar thing and have for years, I think most cities do. Our police and firefighters do the hospitals and also the homeless shelters. When I had a day job, we collected toys every year and the cops came and got them.

One year somebody donated a teddy bear that was five feet tall. When a couple of cops came out to pick up the gifts, it crowded in the lobby and we got them them to pretend they were arresting the bear. We got pictures of it and the one of bear being patted down with its hands on the trunk of the patrol car was priceless.

I love that they do the escorts. It's so refreshing from what their usual role is.

Here we have "Shop with a cop". Each child is given $100.00 and has to spend I think at least $25.00 of that on warm clothing and the rest however they want. When they get to the register to check out, if it comes to a little more than that the cop pays for it out of his own pocket.

The secret service doesn't get bad press...unless its for false arrest and usualy thats with the help of local police.

It takes a certain mentality to want to be a cop (and not realy be trying for detective or something). The want for authority and the right to carry a gun... now I have nothing against the secret service...well alteast not against the guys low down the ladder. Those guys just signed up out of patriotism- to take a bullet for someone.
