Does It Matter Where Your Gift Comes From? posted 11/29/2008 3:25:13 PM | 2 kudos what's this?     report abuse   casuallylooking I know more and more people who are dong some everyday bargain hunting and shopping at thrift stores. flea markets...auctions..etc. And a few who are now doing Christmas shopping for things that they know loved ones would really like and maybe can't be found else where. And I know a few people who have never stepped a foot in one and probably never will. Last week I went to quite a few thrift stores trying to find something for a friend who had me on a mission... and a thrift store was my best possiblity. Still didn't find what I was looking for. So eBay fell in next. However while I was at one store there was a lamp that I know a really good friend of mine would love, and it would fit into her decor perfectly. Not to mention she needs one. I was in a hurry and didn't have the time to wait in line to get it for her. So, this morning I called her and told her about it. She went nuts and was determined to get over there right away to see if it was stillt here. She told her boyfriend it is going to be one of her Christmas presents from him.. He just stood there looking at her.. then he finally asked if she was serious. He was surprised that she would want something for Christmas that was second hand and came from a thrift store.. Even though most of their house is decorated from them, yard sales and auctions. She told him what does she care where it comes from or if it is brand new as long as it is something she really likes and really wants. He said kewl, let's go Christmas shopping... She got her lamp.. and she's thrilled. I have a good idea what he'll be getting later.. Do you shop at thrift stores and such? .......Would you mind if someone got you a gift that came from one? ...... And would you buy someone a gift from one? 	Last year my mom gave my daughter tons of perfect Barbies, all that was missing was the packaging. (less trash for me!!) My mom is a thrift store junkie......I've acquired alot of neat things from thrift stores.

	I shop at thrift stores once every 5 years.., I'm a buyer..not a shopper! But If the Giver wanted to give me sumfin from a yard sale or such.... Its the Love .. I want!!!! The guift would be Cherished till I Die!

	Cross-shopping is smart shopping. And I love shopping at thrift stores because of the sheer variety. My sister would never dream of shopping at a thrift store, but yet I have on occasion found her the perfect unique gift there. I don't say where I got it. She knows I shop there. Sometimes someone might compliment something I am wearing at work, which is fine unless they ask where I got it. Then I simply don;t remember, or just say I got a really good deal. Thrift stores are also a good resource for role play, including dresses and outfits that are meant to be worn once and cut/torn to shreds...mmmmm.

	My very favorite gifts are made out of construction paper, paste and maybe some macaroni.. yup.. those are the ones that make me smile when I look at them years later.

	no it doesnt matter where it comes from,I know that they were thinking of me at the time they bought it.or made it,,and thats all that matters....the thought

	don't care WHERE it comes from...only WHO it comes from I think RNJ has the right idea. My best friend scoured garage sales, looking for a baby doll that I had as a kid. Her husband wondered if she was off her rocker until she found the doll and gave her to me. Then he thought I was off mine because I was crying. I've been watching eBay for several years, off and on, to find my sister a toothpick holder like my grandparents had. I know if I find it at a price I can afford, it will be one of the most special presents she ever received. As for me, probably 80% of the gifts I give are handmade. My son-in-law proudly tells people I have made things for him. The monsters adore the things I have made for them. My adult nephews still ask if I am going to make them a new ornaments every year. I love that they feel this way about something that gives me so much pleasure to create for them.

	Heck yeah. Just the fact that somebody saw something they knew someone would like....the fact they were being unselfish, and were thinkin of somebody else, you bet your sweet bippy. It's fantastic. Heck..got the best pair of cowboy boots i ever had at one of those places, and then the whole thing about finding things there that you just can't find anywhere else...lots of people would actually prefer it than get...say, a tie, or a shirt, or something that will just sit in the closet till you end up moving, or....dying?

	The toys at my house for the grandkids came from yard sales and thrift stores....I've shopped those places for years. When I was a single mom working 3 jobs to support my kids (3 of them) we never had much at Christmas, but I could always find something there for them. And I agree, if it's from the heart and they put a lot tof thought, time and effort into it...who cares where it came from? Not me!!
