I read an article today in my local newspaper and wanted to share because I know this topic has been brought up before.....
I REMEMBER taking a spelling test in high school a long time ago that included the word "meteorology." I botched it badly, and the teacher took great delight in telling the class "that's the worst spell of weather I've ever seen." Obviously he'd been hoping somebody would mess up so he could drop his joke on us. I never misspelled it again.
But I remembered the incident recently when I was struck by how much misspelling, how many grammatical mistakes, how much dumbing down has compromised a beautiful language.
I don't mean to pick on the kids, because language abuse cuts across all age groups. But you see spelling mistakes all the time on the outdoor signs at fast-food places where so many young people work. I've seen "Bergers." I've seen "Frys." However, I assume grownups are responsible for the huge sign over the front door of a store in Dallas, Texas. The sign reads: "Bargin City." Maybe the sign is too big and too expensive to change, or maybe they just like the notoriety it brings.
Much closer to home, I still remember the sign I saw a few years ago at a downtown Toledo auto repair business. "Wheel Alinement," it said. I would prefer to have my wheels aligned, but on some level I guess you'd want your wheels in "a line" too - two on the left, two on the right. So I'll give those guys a pass though they don't deserve it. The rest is here.
I'd say he hit the nail right on the head

this has to do with the news paper, I saw an add in the lost and found section and it said missing dalmation half black half white.
And just to let you know my spelling is horrible, but I try to learn the best way I could.

My granfather was an English teacher so he drilled into my head how to spell and speak correctly. My kids call me their walking dictionary...lol But getting older doesn't help in spelling you forget how to spell some words.. Drives me nuts till I give in and look the word up just to make me happy and find out I spelled it right....

Does anybody teach grammar any more? Do high school students know how to diagram a sentence? Do they even know what the term means?
Carelessness abounds in the way we talk and write these days. Text messaging gets much of the blame. When a teenager text messages his girlfriend with "U R A Q T…C U @ 8?, she can figure it out, and maybe it saves a little money to do it that way, but it's still dumbing down the language and I don't like it. Thank you...thank you...THANK YOU!
Sometimes I can excuse the wet-behind-the ears, fresh out of HS young'ns. Not their fault the system's failing them. However,if you are a grown-ass man or woman speaking that way...FAIL. In fact,I have an example from a guy who emailed me that was old enough to be my dad...I'm going to go find it.

This reminds me...
There is a sign at a check cashing store down the road from my work and I have to see it every day on my drive here and I look at it like, "what in the hell?"
It's one of those flashing signs and it says, "Comming Soon" and then it flashes again and says, "Coming Soog".
I mean come on...are you for real?

Was in college a couple years back, in Chicago.
Writing course consisted of a paperwork lookalike for an owners manual for a course book.
Half the book was teaching the difference between:
Their They're There.....etc....
IN COLLEGE. WTF happened to them teachin that shit in 3-4th grade...?

It would take me more time to type that incorrectly than it would to type it the right way. Unbelievable.

Hey Luna ! I got the same email from the personal trainer in New Orleans. I think he is in need of some personal training himself...in the 'edumacation' of constructing sentences that won't send you to the eye doctor!

Ok in all fairness, I tend to write the way I speak.. leaving off the g in the ing bit.. and fouling up words on purple.. but.. no really I do know the rules so I figure that since I KNOW em I can break em. What's sad is when nobody knows them.

My man is from Brooklyn, born and raised. If he spelled everything that came out of his mouth with the serious accent he has, he's be misspelling shit all the time...lol He barely uses R's....LMAO!
Sometimes people purposely use grammatical errors to get attention and that they do....you noticed it enough to pick out the mistake right? Now you will never forget it either!!!

Ok in all fairness, I tend to write the way I speak.. leaving off the g in the ing bit.. and fouling up words on purple.. but.. no really I do know the rules so I figure that since I KNOW em I can break em. It's obvious what you are doing and it's done in a casual manner. There are a lot of folk that do that and I think it's fine...actually, it adds to the 'flavor' of what is being said. An enhancement or seasoning. And, yes, you have to know the rules before you can break them.
Then there are the typos...and I think most of us realize when those are done by accident as opposed to an idiot on the keyboard.
Speaking of grammar...where the hell is Dick Slippery? I need him and his deviant mind back here. Let's hunt him down, k? Anyone up for a Dick hunt? I say we inundate his mail , begging him to come back and entertain the masses!

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't the english language always evolving and this is the highest point of litteracy in history (atleast as far as the english langauge is concerned).
How is it that people always forget to idk, say look through 50 year old newspapers for Misspellings, and grammatical mistakes? Would it realy be asking to much for them to do some research?

For all of you who are going to cite litteracy rates and tell me how wrong I am and how we had higher rates back in the 70's, I present the following http://social.jrank.org/pages/938/How-Educated-Are-We-Literacy-Rates-Early-Years.html Thats right, the changed the definition of litteracy. Kinda like how the std rate "jumped" when they added the clap and hpv to the list (they previosly hadn't been on it...early america was no place to find a clean whore...or statesman...).
Here is what I want to know, what ever happened to the scientific method...

A friend of mine has this huge decal on the back window of his truck:
"Brakes are for pussys"
What amazes me is that this decal was commercially made! Either the entire corporation is illiterate or someone intentionally opted for "pussys" instead of "pussies."
WTF?
