Well ... here we are again ... another Veterns Day weekend.

As many of you are preparing to greet the holiday session with family and good friends ... Ill spend the holidays with "The Bottle". An annual ritual.

It all started the day I mustered out of the service, back in the day, before I left the base for the last time, I swung bye the package store, kind of a spur of the moment thing, a bottler of 20 yo Scotch tucked safely in my gear ... you know, the good stuff. And a Dee-Lux set of shot glasses. My intention was to make a toast on Veterns day every year ... to my fallen mates. Hears to "Haynes", the "Ghetto Snip" from New York City. And "This ones for you "Shaky" Baker, who cleared some wreckage blocking the hatch that had me and my hose team trapped: and "the Troll"... oh yeah Steffy ... my "Steaming" mate, damn ... we tore up some of the finest "Dives" in West Pack back in the day.

That bottle sits on my desk as I type this blog tonight, There's only one of the Jiggers left. Its time for the toast again. One last duty to perform! No I don't expect ya all to understand, or to know how I feel. few will anyway, and to those that do, no words are necessary, or adequate, Please don't try to pretend you do ... Ill know the difference.

In all that time that toast has never been made, I usually tell myself, there's no hurry, Ive got all weekend after all, and a three day weekend at that. Well ... some how, Ive ended up with a Bottle of 60 yo Scotch. Besides, the whole point was to remember them and there sacrifice, not to get falling down drunk. Even when an ungrateful nation could not, or would not. And just the simple act of retrieving that Bottle from the safety deposit box always seemed adequate.

Ill complete the ritual next week when I return the Bottle to the bank vault, in the Midnight Blue Velvet lined Walnut case I built for it all those long years ago. The tax stamp unbroken after all this time. Just the same as I always do ,,, year after year, decade after decade.

But this year is different. You see, as I set here, occasionally picking up the glass and setting it before me. selecting the familiar name for the first round, then pushing the glass away time and again as I realise ... I cant remember there faces any more, and I wonder ... do they remember me still?

It just sucks getting old.

Godspeed

Master Gry

I am confused. Did you write this or is it copy/paste? The blog mentions the weekend and blogging tonight, yet it was posted Tuesday morning. Just curious.

My dad is a WW II navy vet and gets into all of the hoopla. Myself and other Viet Nam era vets generally do not. WW II was quite clear on what the issues were, Nam was another matter.

Okay, that makes sense now. Now that you have finished the bottle of scotch, are you going to replace it and continue the tradition?

WOW ...

Funny thing bout that ... a friend took me down to the bank this week ... The bottle is setting here on my desk as I type, right beside my keyboard. unopened still. But its early, I don't usually do shooter before noon much any more, Guess I just got tired of herling on my shoes

Yes ... I know Ive turned this into a phobia.

Im at apathy about that

Apathy = "I don't care, and I don't care that I don't care"

You're absolutely right. No words are necessary and certainly none are adequate. Sometimes just a simple I understand is enough
