Saw this in the news this morning and had to share. So many of us 'live' online and it made me think of how some folks really take their online lives too far. When is it a problem? Where do you draw the line?
Online divorcee jailed after killing virtual hubby By MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press ADVERTISEMENT TOKYO: A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband's digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, police said Thursday.
The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.
"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.
The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.
HOT GAME OF THE WEEK: FAR CRY 2 She has not yet been formally charged, but if convicted could face a prison term of up to five years or a fine up to $5,000.
Players in "Maple Story" raise and manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting against monsters and other obstacles.
The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married, and killed the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his beloved online avatar was dead.

I've heard of people that get into those virtual reality games and they actually get so consumed with them they believe the shit is real....they become so addicted they spend all their time online. I watched Dr. Phil one time (yes I watch Dr. Phil once in a while lol) and this guy was on there and his wife was ready to divorce him because he was so addicted and spent like 80 hours a week on this game. He had his kid one time while his wife was at work, she swallowed something poisonous and was just like, "oh well...my wife can deal with it when she gets home" and let the kid lay there on the couch while he played his stupid game....what the hell is wrong with people???

For what we do online, I believe it is the point of leading someone on. You really shouldn't lead someone on that you may not be interested in. Be honest and up front with the person.....like I always say.....lay it all out!!!!!

I heard of another couple in England I believe, the husband and wife split and the wife changed her Myspace or Facebook profile to say single. The husband told his parents it made him look like an ass, so he drove to her (their) home and stabbed her while she slept. Nice, huh?

The phrase "get a life" comes to mind. Sheesh. As for the charges, I'd say it's a waste of money. IRL, not a damn thing happened in either case. IRL, if these people take this stuff so seriously, 'sentence' them all to therapy!

Ok other than finding out his password and killing him off virtually..........was there really a crime involved? I mean she killed a virtual avatar.......not the man.........damn im not sure what is more stupid here.......these people taking it so damn serious, him for calling the police, or the police for wasting time with something so damn stupid when they could be solving real crimes........... Maybe he called the virtual police.........
Course maybe its a good example to anyone on the internet.........they could do a whole ad campaigne on internet addiction..........do you spend all your time on the internet.........Do you get sick or jittery when walking away from the computer even if only going to the bathroom........Get help now........shut off that computer.......and walk away..........or this could be you that is virtually killed...........

a woman i've never seen before came by the house yesterday. she was real bosomy, with semi short hair. came to the door, rang the bell. i had seen her from upstairs. i went to the computer instead. real people scare the shit outta me. a 'real' person ya mean. in the flesh? that's frightening. it might have been my x wife queen i lien who got a short haircut. i sorta recognize the car. she's known to have seventy or eighty boyfriends and use their cars. in real life. maybe she's mad at me. i used my psychic abilities. i think she was mad. but maybe it was someone else. they left no note. i shoulda answered the door. and had her come in and we'd just 'go upstairs'. or sit out back by the pool and the tables and chat. maybe it was for my roommates. that's possible too. but i have a hunch it was someone for me. had on a sexy red blouse.

What do I think? I think ... hell the bastard deserved to get killed virtually.. wtf? it's not like she stalked him in the real world or made real world threats against the guy right? I can see her being in trouble for hacking his identity sure.. but the rest.. WGAF!

I have seen this rage every single day on the site I mentioned in my blog, yes people take things like this virtually real, and go to extremes! I have seen dudes give up hot chicks as beautiful as a WWE diva, just so they can win an online game!! Even go as far as quit their job!! And come so enthralled in the online game? They lived nothing for the game and have virtually no life at all! it is UNBELIEVABLE! So yeah, thats where ya go to far and ya need professional help!
