One night last week I couldn't sleep. There was a weird atmosphere in the neighborhood and something just didn't feel right. About 4am I wandered around the house looking out the windows. All clear.
Back in bed, watching tv I heard a strange noise. At first I thought it was was the train yard a mile or so away but something didn't jive with that. So up again, a peek out the front window and two porta potties are on the grass in front of the neighbors house between the sidewalk and the street. What the? So my brain goes into gear. There is a park behind our houses and for the first time since I've lived here the city has had two portable toilets stationed there. Ok that's the source but the reason, kids horsing around?
Rationalization: Well this was two days before an annual event called the Crim festival of races, a bunch of runs the longest of which, a ten miler, goes along the next street over. Could someone have been pre-positioning these things for the Crim? Maybe but city workers aren't going to be out at 4:15 am working. So another explanation. Hmmm, well these belong to a company contracted by the city to provide them. A lot of small business owners have full time jobs, around here a lot of the shops have shifts starting or stopping at 3:30 or 5am. Maybe the owner just happened to be in the area going to or from his job and wanted to get everything set up while he could. Ok but who puts porta toilets in front of someone's house?
Morning broke and I had to go to work and other things occupied my mind. Two days later, race day, the toilets haven't been visited or even touched by Crim racers or support. So, that wasn't it. I walk out to them to write down the company's phone number and then I see the skid marks coming from the park and over the lawn. So it was kids.
A couple nights later, temps in the 80's, windows open, 3:30ish they are in the park YELLING to each other. I'm about to yell at them to shut up when I see a neighbor on his cell talking to them, they aren't his kids. Ok, he handled the situation OR are they helping him look for his dog? On hindsight the yelling did sound a little bit like the dogs name, a little like his voice.
Still......who let's their kids run around in the middle of the night?
I finally got around to calling the portable toilet company, they didn't know anything about them being moved and the next day they came out and put them back.

Er.. from personal experience.. yeah I was a shit.. when I turned 18 to 20 I was one of those 'kids' who moved stuff around and caused general havoc.. so might be that they are legally adults.. just not mentally.

Damn, for a minute there I thought that you were going to talk about me lurking around outside on my quest for blood.
Seriously though, kids should be in by 11pm at night. A lot of places have curfews, but never enforced like they should be.
