I had the opportunity to watch "Million Dollar Password" last night and when I saw Regis Philbin hosting, I knew it had a chance to be good.

Now, I've always been somewhat of a game show guy, as growing up, there wasn't 200 channels to choose from, so over the summer, it was game shows and soap opears.

The thing that's the biggest difference between classic game shows and the game shows of today are the hosts.

My theory has always been that hosts don't make good actors/singers, and vice versa.

Now, obviously there are some exceptions (Howie Mandell comes to mind), but I'm talking in general terms here.

Regis Philbin is the host of "Million Dollar Password" and he is a true host. That's what he does best.

Bob Barker was a host, and a very good one.

Drew Carey, as talented as he is, is not a host, and therefore is all wrong for the "Price Is Right", in my opinion.

The problem with game shows nowadays is that because of reality competition producers feel it's important to hire a "name" celebrity as the host, instead of giving the gig to a true "host".

When I think of game show hosts, I think of the likes of Barker, Gene Rayburn, Peter Marshall, Bert Convey, Ray Combs, Chuck Woolery, Peter Tomarken, and Bill Cullen.

Carey, William Shatner (Show Me The Money), Donny Osmond (Pyramid), Louie Anderson (Family Feud), and John McEnroe (The Chari) are not my idea of game show hosts. They're celebrities that just happen to be hosting a game show.

By the way, I consider Maury Povich a true "host", but didn't look right hosting the short-lived "21" revival back in 2000 on NBC.

Anyway, what are some of your favorite game shows/game show host from today and yester-year?

I don't watch today's game shows. I was very fortunate that my mom watched games shows and not soaps, so it became common to watch them with her after school. I will still watch two on occasion on the Game Show Channel, The Newlywed Game hosted by Bob Eubanks (the guy was perfect for the show), and The Match Game with Gene Rayburn.

One thing I have noticed from many of the classics compared to the new ones is that many of the classics involved celebrities participating with the regular people. Password, The Match Game, and Hollywood Squares come to mind. The improvisation could be so funny. I don't think that you see that anymore. I did a blog with some of the funniest lines from Hollywood Squares, I'll see if I can find it.

I'm a little too young to remember "American Bandstand;" I'll always think of Dick
Clark as the host from "$20,000 Pyramid"!

Damn shame about that guy...

Hmmmm.... a blog on a singles site and I'm the first to mention "The Dating Game?" It was fun in a cheesy '60s kinda way.

WoW is right about "Hollywood Squares." Abso-fucking-lutely-hilarious! I never cared about the contestants, I lived for the humor and innuendo!
