"Fool's Gold" Coin posted 8/5/2008 4:19:04 AM | 0 kudos what's this?     report abuse   xquseme The United States continues to attempt to adopt a dollar coin that the population will accept and use. So now, the fourth such version of the dollar coin is embodied in the Presidential Dollar series. At first, the coins looked rather plain...kinda empty, actually. Then, upon examining the EDGE of the coin, I found out why... The words "In God We Trust" have been removed from the FACE of the coin, and moved to the EDGE! You nearly need a magnifying glass to read the words, once you've found them! Maybe it's just me, but...does this bother anybody else?!? Even just for the sake of tradition, why would such a change be made, and with SO LITTLE FANFARE??? Next time I flip a coin and it balances on its EDGE, maybe I'll feel a little better, but until THEN...???? Anybody else notice this, or feel the same way? So now, the fourth such version of the dollar coin is embodied in the Presidential Dollar series. It too won't take the place of paper bills. I like most Americans prefer paper bills to coins. The words "In God We Trust" have been removed from the FACE of the coin, and moved to the EDGE! You nearly need a magnifying glass to read the words, once you've found them! Maybe it's just me, but...does this bother anybody else?!? As long as it's still on them then I don't have a problem with it.

	I think the coin looks less like Monopoly money than the the newer bills do... "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." and not all religions worship only one god.

	I'm with straddle as long as its still included i"m okay with it. I may not be religious but damnet our nation was built "under God"

	It just surprised me that such a dominant phrase (along with "E Pluribus Unum") had been moved to the part of the coin that nobody looks at! It's interesting that the "Sacagawea" dollars carried the phrase, but the presidential dollars moved them... My ex and I took a trip to Niagara Falls a while ago, and noticed several interesting differences. No paper "singles" were used. "Loonies" (dollar coins with a loon on the reverse), and "Twonies" (a larger two dollar coin) were used, and the system seemed to work pretty well. Rather than "In God We Trust," the inscription "D G Regina" [God Save the Queen, I guess?] was present. The Moosehead beer at the Canadian Appleby's sure tasted better than the American version, too!
