I was thinking about getting a couch for my office, you know, just in case I wanted to...a...take a nap,yeah, that's it...take a nap during those long work days. Not sure if I can afford a new one, so the question is raised;

"Would you ever buy a used couch from a stranger?"

I mean, you never know what has happened on that couch. Or would that make it more interesting? I've done it on couches and in chairs, on all kinds of furniture, so it stands to reason any used furniture I buy would also have been christened.

So, how about you? Would you buy it?

Sure I would, if it is really good quality and quite expensive new, that might be the only way I could afford it.

The best way to locate good furniture at a good price is at estate sales. CraigsList is the place to locate them. Also people will post there when not having an estate sale. It could be because of a divorce, relocation, or somebody just deciding to reinvent the living room.

The more affluent the neighborhood the seller lives in, the cheaper the price and the better the condition. They are often more concerned about getting it out of their garage quickly than they are with the amount of money they get for it.

The same applies for large appliances.

I never go out and buy furniture or even try to find any because it finds me. I know a lot of people and had known many more in the 18 years since my divorce.

I almost have a clearing house for it. One of my friends kid getting their first apartment? Let's check with Bruce. I am out of sofas right now, but there are several chairs, coffee tables, and end tables to choose from in the garage, ranging in style from early salvation army to contemporary good will.

I have had a used couch before, but I knew who the owners where, but Yes, I dont see anything wrong with that. If there was concern, you could always get it professionally cleaned for a good price, then it really would be like brand new!! I did finally buy my first couch, I am the only one who has sat on it!!

Oh, one of my bedrooms has a real nice bed with Simmons Posturepedic mattresses. Many visitors and two roommates have had many a good night's sleep on it. This is due in part because I never mention that the original owner died in it.

Ewwww but i guess i wouldnt want to be told i was sleeping on a mattress someone died in either..........tho to be honest that is one thing i dont buy used...........Just because I know all the dead skins and stuff that gets into fibers that even cleaning doesnt get rid of...............lol

Btw...Bruce is right............craigslist is the best...........

I always suggest to any of the roommates that they invest in a plastic mattress cover for that very reason.

New furniture??? What's that??? One time in my life, my husband and I bought new living room furniture....oh...and a waterbed.

I am mentally looking around my house right now...not one new thingy here! Including my bed and it's the most comfortable bed I've ever owned. So maybe who knows how many did their "thing" in it...it's mine now and if I'm lucky someday I'll find someone to do my "thing" in it too...again.

Skin cells? Ya get 'em by just hugging someone so what's the big deal? I don't sweat the small stuff.

That is definitely something to consider if you have the skill, because you get some real old furniture and they were made with some very solid hardwood armatures, not the cheap pine crap we have seen for the past 20 years. Same can be said for any furniture made of wood. You can just try to pick it up to tell, unless it is particle board, God forbid.

My daughter found this black enamel covered dresser in Missouri that was being thrown out, nothing wrong with it. She noted the weight and looked inside. It revealed the most gorgeous oak. She took it home, sanded and refinished it. It is beautiful now.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. Today I saw the VP of a bank I know and asked him if the bank warehoused old furniture. THey do and he may give me the couch that was in his old office. The search narrows!

No way! I always have to buy new when I'm buying.

You're not going to believe this, but the area where I live in we have a lot of people that use old furniture on their front porches. It looks so tacky when they do this shit. Also, you would have to worry about what gets inside couches and recliners, along with loveseats when you use them for a porch. Also, that would be on my mind about what's in them when you buy used furniture from people.

I'd maybe buy a used leather or fake leather couch that could well cleaned. That's about it though.
