I am house sitting for friends right now. They have a house that overlooks the gulf of Alaska with all the islands within kayaking distance. It is a perfectly still sunny day at 10am and as I sit out here in the deck I wanted to share my sensations with you all and pehaps take you on a visual vacation. Enjoy!

I taste a cup of freshly brewed coffee with macadamia nut flavoring.

I smell the aroma of my coffee wafting up from the cup. The oceans fresh crispness and the kelp steaming in the sun at low tide comes in on a gentle breeze. A new mown lawn smell and the heady scent of rhododendrons blooming mingled with other flowers planted in patio pots all mingle together and speak of summer.

I close my eyes and hear a coast guard helicopter passing by on a training exercise, the gentle lap of the ocean against the low tidal rocks..alternating with the arrival of speedboat wakes swishing the ribbons of bull kelp as sportfishermen head out to catch the big one. A massive Stellar sea lion makes a splash and a huff as he surfaces at intervals on his way to town just off the shore. Lawnmowers in the background and a car and truck making their way along the road behind the house into town. Eagles call frm the spruce trees that arise from the cliffs as they talk to newly hatched chicks. Shorebirds locked in an endles cachaphony of calls as they fight for tidbits left by an ebbing tide. Magpies and croes call as they dual over scraps a neighbor tosses off a balcony onto the beach and a speeedboat drones by.... it's wake causes the channel buoy to toll it's bell so solemly. The distant din of a floatplane getting up to speed as it takes people out flight seeing today.

Their place is ocean from and looks out to all the mountains. I just saw a Stellar sea lion swim by and a pod of Killer whales. The ocean is flat calm reflecting an expansive blue sky dotted with high cirrus clouds. In the distance the mountains are still capped with snow entending down into the shadowed canyons because of our late summer. Sportfishing boats zoom out creating a graceful wake as they pass. Shorebirds pick a meal amid the exposed kelp beds. A float plane that looks so clumsy lumbering through the water as it gains speed and rises into the air. It looks like flight would be impossible with such a craft. Eagles whirl in high circles on the updrafts and winds above the calmer lower levels. Shadows of deep green cast by Near island with it's spruce clad cliffs jut out reaching across the bay to my shore. Great grey boulders and logs tossed by many Alaskan storms adorn the beach below. Kayakers wave as they explore what nature offers up and Salmonberries bushy verdant green with developing berries, blooms and busy bumblebees rest the eyes.

Rays of a warm sun kiss my skin and warm me through as I take in my surroundings. Gentle breezes blow wisps of my hair around my face as I sit and enjoy my morning.

I live in Paradise. Wish you could be here too.
