I'm starting to like the idea of socialized medicine, everybody pays a little into the system and then you take out of it whatever you need. Even people that smoke, drink, do drugs and otherwise abuse their bodies are taken care of at no extra charge. What I like most about it is the precidence it sets, not that we need another one, I already pay taxes that educate other people's kids and pay taxes for other people's social security and somehow I'm sure I'm paying for someone else's medical care already. It's all for the good of society though, right. But the thing that has me really excited is adapting the model to something really important, something like socialized gasoline. We all pay into the system a little bit based on our income and then when we go to the pump we take only what we need. Ok, the first 5 or 10 gallons are an out of pocket deductible but after that it's all covered by the government. Think of the benefit to society. Lower income people could now afford to get to work inexpensively and the cost of food and other goods and services would go down as well since the cost of transportation would go down, even non-drivers would benefit. Our economy would go into overdrive, unemployment would disappear, the tourism industry would be revived, the domestic auto industry would be revived. People could afford to live on minimum wage! Really it wouldn't cost much either, imagine the huge discount the government will get on gas when it bargains collectively for the entire nation. Yes, socialized gasoline is the way of the future. I'm sure I'm paying for someone else's medical care already Yeah, you do, through property taxes to public (usually county) hospitals. If you don't own property, your landlord passes the cost on to you in your rent.
socialized gasoline. We all pay into the system a little bit based on our income and then when we go to the pump we take only what we need. That is kind of like an alleged date rape: How you feel about it depends on what end of the dick you're on. In my case, my commute to work is about 40 feet. I assure you that I have no interest in subsidizing the 40 mile commute of a cowboy in west Texas that drives a Dodge Ram hemi.
A couple of other points. The US is finally catching up with what Europeans pay for gas. Norway has it the worst I believe at around nine bucks a gallon. Beyond rising world consumption, notably in India and China, the point of pain is not remedied by more drilling. The problem is that refining capacity is 97 percent of oil production with no new US refineries being built since the seventies.
I would support a windfall profits tax on oil companies with a provision that they can be exempt from it by investing in new refineries.
Now, I am a moderate democrat. But concerning an energy policy, a multi-millionaire republican oil baron, T. Boone Pickens, has a great proposal. http://www.pickensplan.org/theplan/ There are TV ads about it.
