I kinda think that "tomatoe" and "potatoe" are older spellings of the words. Remember
when Dan Quayle was sitting in on a grade school spelling lesson, and prompted one
of the kids to add an "e" to "potato"?? Grandma was probably helping little Dan with
his spelling that day...
