I read Ewe_Wishes blog and this was supposed to be a comment on it..BUT I got a little carried away so I did kind of a copycat blog. It's okay, she'll get over it... Just nobody tell her and she'll never know... Oh heck, I OWE her a payback for a certain phone call...
Anyways, there was a line in her respoinses that said..

And I can remember even before TV was invented
I'm not sure when TV was invented or when people started getting them, but I don't remember having one until I was in about the third grade..Didn't matter anyways, we were too busy playing outside with friends to worry about such a thing.
We all got together everyday and played stick ball, mother may I, tag, hide and seek, hopscotch, jumped off garage roofs, (hense, bad knees now) rode bikes....and most of our bikes we put together from many other bikes. They were cool and different from everyones elses, not made fun of because they didn't cost a mint. Or the latest model.

I can remember going trick or treating and some people gave out pennies instead of candy...And we were happy with that!!
If we were lucky and saved fifty cents, we went to the candy store and bought a whole bag full of penny candy. It took us probably at least five minutes to pick all of it out. Then we shared it with friends, and they always shared theirs..But we still had enough left to last us for days.

We came in when the street lights came on...or else... We got our baths and cleaned the dirt out of our ears and were ready to pass out for the night from exhaustion due to fresh air and playing all day. But we hung out in the living room "together" until it was actual bedtime. We would wake up early the next morning, do our chores and start all over..

Lately there are times when I have been feeling really old..I mean really really old..Especially with the fact that my daughter is going to be 30 in less than 2 months.. I'm not quite sure where that time went..
Then I had a friend over the other day and he and I talked and laughed about the things we did when we were teenagers, and how simple life seemed then to look back at it now... We've been friends for over 32 years... How many friendships last that long anymore?
But when he left and now again after reading Dayna's blog a little while ago, I realize I may be old...and my life may be at least half over with..but it's been a hell of a ride. I wouldn't give those kind of memories up for all the video/computer games or designer clothes in the world..

We were so poor that when I ate lunch I ate just a grape jelly sandwiches and water through most of grade school for lunch every single day..To this day I won't touch the stuff. We struggled, we worked hard, we got our butts blistered with switches when we misbehaved. We got our mouths washed out with soap for saying things children shouldn't be saying or lying. We lived through simpler times and we knew what having fun meant. But we also learned values and respect, for others as well as ourselves....

Nope, I wouldn't trade it to start all over...

You may have been inspired, Dayna......but thanks for the memories and for helping me realize I'm not really that old, I've just got more memories than a lot of people...
Life is here to be enjoyed and appreciated....

Yep....same here with my sisters and I. Mom wasn't afraid to spank our little butts at the store if we pitched a fit. Dad's favorite saying during those fits, "You don't stop crying, I'll give a reason to cry!".

I also remember trips up north to the cabin...Aunts, Uncles, cousins all at our Grandparents cabin in the middle of nowhere. It was so rustic...it had an outhouse. But, the sink did have running water. Grandma used to cook dinners on an old stove that didn't use gas or electric...it was an old cast iron stove and she used paper, kindling, and wood for a fire in it.

All the replies and "copycats" have made me realise something very important.

We may joke about being old and yes we can't do the thigs we one could but we are not anywhere near old. We just think that way because our lives are full of so many diverse memories and stories. and the younger people arround us don't have those types of memories or stories & have not had as full a life.

It's not that we are old but that they have not lived.

Our cabin did also..

But we also learned values and respect, for others as well as ourselves....

That is one thing a lot of the kids don't have these days.

Without checking profiles, I think I'm a tad older that most of you yet I have the same memories...growing up in the '50's was an awesome time. The simplest things was the most fun...a summer day walking the railroad tracks down to the bridge and searching the tall weeds for pretty glass chunks left from an old glass factory long gone. These we added to our pretty rock collection...which we periodically polished and admired.

Playing along the creek catching crawdads 'n minnows and frogs to "study" then let go again. Swingin' on the rope in the hayloft, running thru cornfields until we were so turned around we didn't know where we'd come out at..laughing and squealin'. In my neighborhood, in the summer we didn't have much of a curfew...and we often stayed out until midnight playing graywolf or playing on the school playground equipment...we didn't look for mean things to do....we just played and laughed and were kids enjoying life.

Ahhhhhhhh....those were the days.... Thanks for making me think of them again....
