The Hula Hoop is now 50 years "young".

The hoopla began 50 years ago Thursday when entrepreneurs Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin sought a trademark for a plastic cylinder based on a similar toy that had enjoyed modest success in Australia's school yards.

Before long, the Hula Hoop had more hips swiveling than Elvis Presley.

Wham-O Inc., the company founded by Knerr and Melin, sold more than 100 million Hula Hoops — at a suggested retail price of $1.98 apiece — after just a year on the U.S. market. That was more than one hula hoop for every two Americans at the time.

I never could keep one of those darn things going. To much hoop & not enough hoola I guess

I miss Klackers!! Ya know them 2 balls on a string ya got bangin together real fast..Man I was good with those things right up to the day one string broke & one of them Klacker balls hit daddy in the old family jewel pouch.

The only thing that saved my ass from a belt was he was the one that told me to go get them & show his buddies how good I was with them.

ha ha I loved both the clackers and the hula hoop.. I had my clacker balls for years and years, Heck they may still be at my mother's somewhere... I think that they kinda got outlawed because the strings kept breaking but they sure were cool, I think they were made of acrylic at least mine were you can find tome from time to time but they are cheap plastic and the entire thing is designed to be stationary, ha ha I bet that if someone had the origional ones they could not board a plane with them now I think they also were considered a weapon of mass distruction...

I loved the hoola hoop. I would do it for hours and hours. On my waist, my wrist, knees, and neck over and over. I was really good at it and won quite a few neighborhood or recess contests...

Not so much with klackers..... ,
I beat myself up with them more than anything else..I wouldn't be surprised if I had given myself a few concusions with them...and my right radius bone probably has permanent knots in it...lol

And no, I didn't know...thanks for the memory, Barbara.

Believe it on not, I can lay my hands on two hula hoops in a matter of minutes. I use them for games in the classroom for "learning" purposes

I thought the hula hoop died more than a decade ago.

I recently got back into Rubik's Cube and I found them next the hula hoops in the discount bin in the geezer's toys isle of Wal Mart
