I Am Not A Mechanic............ posted 5/19/2008 9:06:41 AM | 3 kudos what's this?     report abuse   Ewe_Wish I have never been mechanically minded........oh I understand "some" stuff in theory but really not totally. For years if kicking the tire and swearing at the vehicle didn't get it running I was lost...........OK i have given up kicking and swearing at it.........but I am no further ahead of fixing a vehicle today than I was 20+ years ago when I was kicked out of a high school powder puff mechanics class for blowing up their mock engine........no appreciation whatsoever for the fact that school had to be let out early due to the smoke from the engine.......... The only thing I do know for a fact is that when my Camaro gets to that 3000 mark I need to get it in to get the oil changed.........and I do that religious...........well most of the time....... Now I also have a GMC Jimmy that I don't drive much (tho since it is 4 wheel drive I believe I will be using it in Minnesota this next winter quite a bit.... ) but due to me getting and being ill for so long I just didn't drive it......and when I did I noticed the gas mileage was getting worse and it was running rough. My response to that was....just don't drive it. When my son came down for my husbands funeral he decided to take a look at it and when he came into the house he said "Mom, for an intelligent person...........just how dumb can you be?" I told him that it all depends in what regard......... Apparently the only problem my truck had was the air filter.........which looking back hasn't probably been changed since my late husband was still home and he had been in a nursing home for 3 yrs........hmmmm by those calculations at least 30,000 miles ago..........ooops...... It was amazing that once that was replaced how well it ran.......... I told him that him or Gary had always taken care of stuff like that and so I didn't think about it. And besides I am a girl I am not suppose to be thinking about those kinds of things..........(Yea that comment didn't work on him either) Now you would have thought that would make me wonder how long it had been since I changed the Camaro's air filter............but it didn't..... (Hey I am a girl........ ) Driving up to Minnesota I was upset over the fact that it only got 27 mpg and while complaining to my son about this (with gas prices as they are.....there is a lot to complain about) he said "Mom, how long has it been since the air filter was changed in that..........I told him I believe you changed it the last time and he said HOLY SHIT.....that was when I came home on leave from Iraq.......2003..........probably another 30,000 miles....... So off we went in search of a new air filter from Autozone or some such place..........and when he went to change it he came in and said do you know what color a new air filter is........i replied why yes I do (quite proudly I might add) it's white.........he showed me the old filter and saying it was completely black was an understatement........ On the way back from Minnesota I averaged 31.5 mpg........and when you figure I have to use 93 premium that can add up to some money........... When I got home I found that while I was gone someone stole the battery out of my Jimmy..........I called my son to bitch about it and he said...........Well i will be there in a week I will get you a new battery and put it in.........after all You're a girl, I can't expect you to do it.............I believe there was sarcasm in his voice......... So to surprise him I was going to go get a new battery prior to him getting here and than it dawned on me............I really don't know how to put the damn thing in and even if i did.........the only tools i have is a pair of pliers, a hammer and 2 screwdrivers and I don't know that I can do it with that............so it will wait for him. I guess when I get moved back to Minnesota I will have to go reintroduce myself to my old mechanic and set up a maintenance check up dates with him.............. 	Hey Ewe, I'm not terribly machanically inclined either. I can listen to a sound and usually know the cause of the noise, I just never have turned wrenches. I took a shop class in HS. It happened to be taught in the spring, So ALAS! My thoughts and interest had already turned to baseball and the feminine gender. Since the love of my life (at the time) played softball, I had just enough interest to pass......Barely. Even that tiny bit of knowledge has deminished, so I just use a machanic.

	Hi Ewe, when was the last time you changed your spark plugs, checked your fuel filter, checked the air pressure in your tires, checked the anti-freeze level, checked the transmission fluid, brake fluid, or power steering fluid. Serpantine belt, hoses... There is more. These are things that should be looked at, at least once per month or more. Mostly for safety reasons and for the protection of yoiur engine.

Serpantine belt, hoses... Where the hell did all that crap come from?? I'll have my son look into that................cause you know I am a girl................ Oh air pressure in tires is an easy one to answer.........the last time I had a flat on it and called Triple A to change it............I knew the pressure in that one was ummm kinda low............

	I have never been mechanically minded........ I'm the same way. As a matter of fact, I took shop a couple of times in high school because I figured that it would be easy enough to score a good grade. Wow, I was wrong. Found out fast that shop really wasn't my thing. I'm better at english, science, business law and economics, business courses....all that good stuff than shop.

	ummm...about the battery..watch them posts. Some vehicles the posts are on top..and on some, they are on the side. I learned that a long time ago from my dad. I can also change the oil on my car too. But..just can't do things like changing the water pump, alternator, starter, and radiator...just too mechanical for me! *sneaks out to go check air filter*

Umm, yep..It was looking a little dirty and my gas milage had went down some, so I changed it...... And umm..last time I checked, I'm a girl too.. Now, if I could just get the stripped screw out to change my daggone headlight..

	Yeah CL, that stripped screw. Forgot to get that out for you, but had other things on my mind for some reason.... Well Ewe, since you will up here in MN, you can help me pull the front suspension off my Jeep and help me replace the parts.
