I hope that in your life, when faced with an opportunity to make a difference that you'll take advantage of the situation even if it will not strictly benefit you. I feel comfortable speaking about my "situation" since none of you are from my area :-)

I live in an area of condo/townhouses. I saw today that Home Depot was selling name brand Compact Florescent Lights (cfl) at $4.88 for a box of 4. That's $1.22/lamp. For about the same price as a pizza, I bought three boxes and replaced the standard 60 Watt bulbs by our garages with the cfl. They're only turned on once at night and are on all night. These bulbs should meet their expected service life and possibly a little more.

What a nice difference this will make. Based off our electrical rates I calculate a monthly savings of $0.43 per condo. It's not much. I don't think anyone will notice. It certainly doesn't benefit just me, but overall it's a great step towards going green. That was the reason I did it, for reasons other than monetary. Sometimes it's good to do something just because it's right instead of only for one's own benefit.

At a my goal of 3 boxes per paycheck ($15), it'll take some time before I'm done replacing them all. I don't plan on personally mentioning anything to the other condo owners however perhaps an anonymous paragraph in our monthly newsletter would be nice. One question remains, what the hell do I do with all these 60 Watt bulbs I've collected (will be collecting)?

Damn, I wish I did. I live around mostly rented houses full of welfare people who seem to always be in trouble with the law. It's a shame these people have to run down property value for the rest of us who own our houses and that are in good shape.

I'll take them. I have run out of 60 watts bulbs and only have 100 watts right now in the house ready to put in. lol

Check and see if there's a Habitat for Humanity store in your area. They resell donated surplus construction and used household items. I missed the boat to get a brand new storm door there at less than half retail price, because I didn't know what size my door was! By the time I returned an hour later, it was gone!

Plus there is still Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

Fluorescent light bulbs are always a good starting step.I guess my little part is recycling, supporting small companies like this one,for example and using vinegar and baking soda to clean things instead of chemicals. I figure every little bit helps, hopefully this won't be just a "fad".
