Actually the coast is wonderful in the summer and the mountains in the west around Hendersonville and Asheville, Smokey Mountain National Park is some beautiful country if you like the outdoors. Most of the cities are fairly large and the best is Charlotte with NFL and all major sports and very cosmopolitan. Kind of a big state but doesn't take long to get anywhere. Of course I live in Montana where we drive an hour and a half to get to Wal Mart. Oh, if you like racing Charlotte is the center of the NASCAR universe. My favorites there are the coast and the mountains near Tennessee. Most of the people are very nice. Southern hospitality but it is growing and actually quite a large state compared to when I was there. I always liked it though.

North Carolina is a really beautiful state for the most part. We have 4 seasons, winter is usually not brutal except some parts of the mountains. Eastern NC in summer is HOT, humid and flat as a pancake.. From I 85 west it's beautiful, rolling country. Mountains and beaches both are nice. Charlotte is the largest city between Richmond and Atlanta. NASCAR abounds and it has the NFL, NBA and Triple A baseball there as well. Four major universities that at different times are competitive in all three major sports, along with soccer, rugby and golf. IBM brought an influx of folks from western New York, mostly. Not sure anymore, but Charlotte at one time was the banking capitol of the US. That might have changed, I honestly don't know. That brought another influx of people into the area so it's now rare to find a native Charlottean. Charlotte has some pretty decent nightclubs as do the larger cities if that's your interest. The coast has the Wright Memorial at Kitty Hawk. The mountains has the Cherokee Reservation and Harrah's has a casino on the reservation at Cherokee, NC. Asheville has the Biltmore House, a former family home that is now a beautiful landmark in that area. Native North Carolians are friendly and helpful for the most part. I can't say much for SOME of the imports, You'll have to discover that for yourself. Good Luck if you do relocate here.

By the way, the cotton fields you mentioned are in the southeastern coastal plain for the most part. Eastern NC is and has always been Tobacco Country.

Born and raised in NC. Not much to add after Sax and Shy, I'm proud to be a North Carolinian. I haven't found friendlier people anywhere. Genuine and compassionate.

The imports do seem to be lacking in manners.

Southerners just live slowly, we don't see the sense in rushing to the grave.
