Until New Year's Eve I was a veterans employment counselor for the state of Texas for over six years. I won statewide awards three times including being number one and number two for my accomplishments.

I have a 16 page comprehensive resume guide that I assembled that I will be happy to share with anyone seeking a new job. Just send me an email address and I will forward it to you.

On the job search, the best Web search tool is
It is awesome. It works like a search engine in that you can enter your zip code and terms. It drills all the way through the job ads. The more terms you enter, the more precise the matches. For example, if you enter "accounting", "QuickBooks", it will only yield the optimal results that match.

Though not always the case, resumes are documents that present the candidate to prospective employers in a polished fashion. Many times the resume is not written by the applicant. An application, especially one manually written, is a form of a live demonstration of how well the applicant gives attention to details, communicates, and addresses specific issues of interest to the employer. The application is also confidential so information such as social security number, specific contact information for previous employers, criminal background, etc. can be solicited that are inappropriate on a resume.

What I forgot to add is that you should not only have a resume, but every piece of information that could be requested on an application in an MS Word document. That way you can copy/paste it in. It saves a lot of time. Additionally, you ensure that the information is spelled correctly. Employers do deduct for misspelling. Save all of this to a flash drive, they are cheap and portable. Additionally get a Yahoo or Hotmail address and send these files to the account, put them in a special folder. Then you always have access to them no matter what computer with Internet access you use when the need arises.

A lot of companies use temp. agencies to do the heavy HR lifting and then supply people on a temp to hire basis. For the company this is a try before you buy concept. It is not a bad move from a corporate perspective. If the person doesn't cut the mustard, the company does not have to pay the UI, the temp. agency does. Nature of the beast.
