OMG, I'm so not having a good nite. I noticed one of my pair of finches, the female, her name is Milk-was hanging from her nesting basket by her leg. I freaked out and had someone take her out carefully. Her leg is ok, still attached but pretty injured. In the middle of all this, the male flew outta the cage, his name is Cookie. My dog immediatly tried to catch him. I chased the dog outside and finally got Cookie back in the cage. Once both Milk & Cookie were back in the cage I noticed 3 jelly bean things on the bottom of the cage. Now mind you, I had to take the nest out of the cage to get the bird off of it safely. I call my daughter and ask her if she stuck jelly beans in the cage. We have a bowl of them sitting in front of the cage. She smiled and told me no. I know she was telling the truth because she was super excited when she realized they weren't jelly beans, but actually finch eggs!! Now I'm all paranoid because Milk is sitting in the bottom of the cage, she can still fly. I looked up all kinds of things on Google about the eggs and read that it was ok to put them back in the nest, which I did...with clean hands. I truly hope Milk or Cookie will sit on the eggs and hatch them, I'm worried with her injured leg that she won't be able to do much. I'm crying my eyeballs out, but she is ok. I'm going to call my vet in the a.m. and see if there is anything else I can do to help them, but I think I did all I can do. She will be ok and the eggs are ok. I just need to take a breather......Wow....I'm heading to bed....chasing finches around is hard work...lol I'll give you all an update once I see some kind of progress.

we had a canary once and asked our nephew to look after him one week-end when we had to go away. he thought he was doing so well by putting his cage out in the sun for a while, but he sat it on a small chair....and it fell off ! poor old c harlie bird went for a tumble inside the cage and his feed container bounced out of its cradle and landed on top of him braking his leg ever watched a vet put a splint on a canary's leg. we left him for three weeks,he managed to fly around a bit still, just got wobbly sitting on his perch and then we had to ever so carefully peel the sticking tape of his leg and he ended up as good as new.any other vet would have said just knock him on the head and get a new one...didn't even charge to fix him.
I hope your birds come better.

I keep thinking of Foghorn Leghorn.........and when he ran up on that damned dog on the rope and paddled his ass about 15 times.........
I guess I can't do any "Why did the Finch cross the road" jokes with your......Finch.
It will be ok. Birds are pretty damned tough.
Story: I had a duck one time, for whatever reason, stayed outside the coop one night during winter.
That duck ended up being 2 feet shy of having 2 feet. Yep, I put it in the oven with the door open, warmed the old duck up, but had to.......remove the problem areas.
Frostbite is just not funny.
However, that duck went on to have a good life, minus 2 webbed feet. Couldn't swim, didn't act like it cared. Could still make Duck Sex with the ladies though, just had to balance, and man he learned the man-balance.
I miss that duck. Died of old age.
Oddly, the best damned duck I ever had, since, it happens to be the only one I can remember........
