What Does Make One A Top Blogger?

Before anyone gets their shorts or panties in a twitch let me clarify this blog is not directed at anyone. And BTW if you are one in the au naturale group then don’t get a burr in your butt.

Now that being said let me say that I am one of the individuals that does not blog that often and most of my blogs have been jokes that I received from someone via email. While I get hundreds of them I occasionally receive one I have not heard before that strikes me as too cute or funny so I share it. Others on AMD may have already heard it or not think it is that cute or funny; so be it. Read it, yawn and move on to another blog.

But I am getting off topic to why I am writing this blog. Today I saw some comments with reference as to “top blogger”. Now when I read the original comment I “assumed” the blogger meant quantity as I do remember that at one time they passed the 400 blog count milestone. Then I saw where someone made a comment about what makes a “top blogger” and it got me to thinking; “What does make a top blogger”? To some I think it is an actual competition but if that is so then what is the standard; quality, quantity; number of views, comments or kudos, or some other criteria.

Now I also saw the comment that, in general, bloggers were “attention whores”. I suspect there is a lot of truth in that comment and some only blog to be seen. I have also observed that some blog for what appears to be “number of views”. I say that because I have seen some blogs late of night, or early morning, that suddenly have 50-100 views in just a few minutes. Recently I even observed one that received over 300 “hits’ in about 1 hour & 30 minutes when there was only 177 individuals on line. Since it only received 10 comments in the same period I doubt that everyone on line was impressed with it enough to read it at least twice. Then am I to “assume” that the hit count was due to the blogger “stroking” their own ego by repeatedly viewing their own blog.

While some may go for view count others appear to go for quantity, doing numerous blogs consisting of 3-4 sentences but little substance other that make a person go, “Humm, why do I wear briefs instead of boxers”?

Then there are the ones that seem to go for quality. They may not blog often but when they do it is thoughtful and well written. Generally it has a topic that appeals across age and gender that many can relate to. These are usually identifiable by the number of comments, and no, that does not mean the count total when it is captured and taken off topic. These are the ones I enjoy most but that is just me and my personal preference.

Since I do not want to turn this blog into a book let me wrap it up by asking, “What do you think are the attributes that makes a good blog or a top blogger”; quality, quantity; number of views, comments or kudos, or some other criteria.

what makes a top blogger? hmmmm...gotta think on that..

Quality, certainly. A blog should be interesting, but, that depends on what an individual finds interesting. After that I would have to say number of comments and number of blogs written.

Someone once tried putting a burr in my butt and one in my pussy too.. I must say I didn;t care for the experience.

I find intelligence sexy. Intelligent blogs are sexy. Intelligent comments that add to the blogger's point or request for insight.

This is a sex site.

And I find many of your blogs sexy.

I don't know if I can answer your question. I don't blog very often either, when I do it's because I have something to say. I would hope that the blogger writes for themselves first and others second. At least that's why I do it.

Well apparently I stuck my foot in my mouth today when I wrote that blog and if I offended anyone it certainly was never my intentions............when I was talking about being one of the top bloggers I was simply referring to the few of us that blogged all the time. There was never a competition...........well I shouldnt say never......straddle and I loved to joke about who would make 400 first.........but thats the only one I competed against and it was all in fun.

Let me also point out that I have never felt there was a popularity contest or any other kind of contest to be done in the blogs as far as competing against other bloggers. I love to write and thats why I write blogs.........In the same respect there are some bloggers on here that i don't personally like there style of writing so I don't read their blogs.........that doesn't make them bad writers......just means i don't care for their style of writing.......its my own personal choice............just as others have the right to read mine or not............

As for the comment attention whore........I will stick by that one.........if you didn't want the attention why would you bring yourself out into the open for it........there are just degrees of how much attention a person is seeking.........and again that is your own personal thing if you want more attention or less attention...........

As for those who continually open their blogs to get their view count up.........hey more power to them.........If thats what it takes to make them feel better about themselves.......so be it........

Good blog Swyeter.........you damn attention whore...you..........

Furthermore....does the motive behind someones reason to blog really matter?

Although, truth be told, I can't stand reading the same banal crap day in day out, it eats up the space on the main page for blogs that could picque my interest...

By banal blogs, I refer to the "My penis", "Pussy questions", "My name is ___ and Im looking to fuck"..<----really, you'relooking to fuck? Never'ave guessed that...This is a sex site, therefore you're hardly required to post shoutout style fuck-me blogs...since y'know....we all know you're here for...

A top blogger - in all seriousness - (to me) consists of a variety of things:

frequent 0R consistent posts; either number of unique commenters or relevance of discussion if not unique (meaning, it's not a "frivolous" banter; blog views may or may not matter as some blogs do attract a lot of attention - but there are a lot of people who prefer to read but not comment (or prefer to comment privately), so that part can be hard to factor in. I think content is irrelevant when looking at what makes a top blogger - certain subjects might be more popular than others, so someone who blogs on those topics may be more likely to be considered a "top blogger" than one who blogs on "off" or "off color" topics, but I still really don't think content as much a factor. The final thing I think plays a role in determining a "top blogger" is how positive or negative the person's blogs are - in a general sense. I say this because, since "top" is a positive thing, it doesn't strike me that someone who gets lots of hits and unique comments on negative blogs would be considered a "top blogger".

All that said, I think the only way to know who "top bloggers" are would be by popular vote.

Thats just the same for me too. I also cant get into that whole why dont you use spell check crap. When I write, my mind is going 100 mph. and my fingers are just trying to keep up. I believe that a blog, is just that, its a slur from what drips from my brain onto the internet. If there are people online that can write crap like ..."idk y u r duin dis now? rotflmao" then I think I have the right to let a typo get past me now and then without having someone tell me to use spell check.

Good blog, buddy.

if you didn't want the attention why would you bring yourself out into the open for it

I've actually posted a couple of blogs that I was hoping would get an abundance of views. I could care less if they recieved comments. One was on safety. I was just trying to pass on some good info and make people aware of some things.

Good bloggers have a following. People sign on and look for their blogs. And there is a popularity thing behnd it also. If I were to grade my own blogs, I would give them the full range. From an A+ to an F. I average about a 78%. My comments on the other hand are at about an 83%.

So is it the views? Is it the number of comments recieved? Or a combo of both?

I only comment on half the blogs I like. We all view blogs weather we like them or not. We don't know we don't like them until we view it. I also comment on blogs I don't like.

I would just like to take a moment here to say I love you all.

Blogs are blogs. I'll enjoy the ones I like and piss on the rest.

top blogger?? This is me ...no silly, I'm talkin' about the face.

It startles me sometimes when people talk about such things as....number of blog views/blog comments/popular list. I rarely notice where I stand or how many views I've had. You see, I don't care. Should I? So I can write to feed the population the things they like? I don't think so.

What I've noticed is the high number of comments on (1) blog war postings and (2) sex content..usually the wilder it is, the more comments are posted. Neither is my cup of tea.

I blog whatever I feel led to blog and it matters not to me whether it's read or passed by. My fingers tap out whatever is on my mind and it's then the reader's choice to do with it whatever they like.

Any "contest" to settle who is top blogger...if that is seriously being considered....then I ask to be left out of it....that, IMO...is just asking for trouble and I want no part of it.

RR ~ I trust then your comment meant that my blog had some interest for you.

S&S ~ I tend to concur with your observations.

Belle ~ Not sure I know how to twitch your panties but do know how to do a wedgie; will that suffice.

aftershox ~ Double ouch! Ahhh, I think she just gave me a compliment or was that a “wanna fuck”. Dayum wish I was smart enough to know which.

Belle ~ Very valid point that I did not address, I do like the blogs that appear to be where the blogger wrote for self first then others. Kind of goes with the saying, “To thine own self be true”.

Ewe_Wish ~ Lucky you, your mouth is so big that you should not have any trouble getting your foot out. ATTENTION WHORE, who are you calling an attention whore? You the one that wrote a blog on my blog so who is the real attention whore here.

clickedanad2 ~ Very good points

DF ~ I agree that if the reader enjoyed it then that is all that is significant.

clickedanad2 ~ Another good point; I would not have written this one if she had not posted hers. That two good be something that makes a top blogger, someone that inspires others to blog.

JackOften ~ I guess I could also say it’s a feeling or mood. I am not one to just sit and write but give me something I can “feel” and I can write you a book.

StraddleMyNose ~ I got to ask, “You trying to capture my blog”?

DF ~ I agree I don’t think it really matters except as you have noted; sometimes there are so many banal or inane blogs that I lose interest in reading any of them and thereby miss the good ones.

Ewe_Wish ~ Dayum, now you and Straddle are both trying to capture my blog!

Girlcountry ~ Can’t argue with that.

SxzeNewMe ~ Now that’s a lot to think about. A bloggers frequency or consistency is not what I would necessarily consider indicators of how good or bad an individual is at blogging. The book “Black Beauty” is considered a classic but it was Anna Sewell's only book. Relevance is too subjective; let a man write a “Spit or Swallow” blog and it may get 10 hits and 9 of them will be to tell him that the subject been blogged 16 times the last thirty days. But let a sexy woman write the same “Spit or Swallow” and it may receive 400 hits and 100 comments partially because men out number women 10 – 1 on AMD and after all it is a sex site. Positive or negative I would not consider a major factor as some only write negative and I must admit that I do enjoy some of their writings after all everything is life is not positive. And I am not talking about those that write just to piss, bitch, groan or moan. Now all that being said I would not consider popular vote as a deciding factor because that would be more of popularity contest than a “top blogger” indicator. In my opinion “top blogger” should be for left up to each individual; if the individual thinks someone is a “top blogger” then they are; at least to them. I for one know there are individuals on AMD that I seldom or never read their material. Then there are two women and one man that everything they post I read because I consider them “top bloggers”. Would others think the same, I do not know but then like I say, “What constitutes top blogger should be left to each individual”.

clickedanad2 ~ Your vote counts where it is most important, you like what an individual blogs then you can say they are a “top blogger”.

Medussa ~ What can I say, I do not like to make assumption but unless someone can come up with a logical explanation then…………….

JackOften ~ Now that I can relate to. I retired as a computer security specialist but two finger type and “fat finger” a lot of keys.

PP ~ Dude what can I say other than you have the right attitude about writing and reading blogs. If it is something you want to write the blog it and if it is something you do not like then piss on it and move on.

Softy ~ FYI you are one of the two women that I always read, just never sure which one is going to be writing the blog, you or Sybil. Don’t intend on making it a contest but if there was one you would not have a chance because your votes would be split between you and Sybil.

Ewe_Wish ~ That is how it should be, write for yourself and damn the rest.

RR ~ As I have told the others that is how it should be and all that matters.

Cutecarrie ~ That is one contest that I feel should be avoided. Like I indicated in my blog, there are a few egomaniacs on here that would piss and moan for a year or more if they did not win. There is already too much BS in here as it is without someone’s deflated ego causing more.

Ewe_Wish ~ ^^^^^^^^^^ Nuff said? GOOD!

A bloggers frequency or consistency is not what I would necessarily consider indicators of how good or bad an individual is at blogging.

That wasn't the question that was presented. The question was “What do you think are the attributes that makes a good blog or a top blogger”. I don't equate a "top blogger" with a "good blogger". Not everything that is at the top is good - have you heard some of today's "music"? So, I addressed the question you posed.

I'm not sure that someone who blogs twice a year would be considered a top blogger, but your statement that blogs "just to piss, bitch, groan or moan" would be the "negative" types I'm talking about; not life's trials and tribulations. In other words, we agree on that, just as we agree that content doesn't so much factor in.

I would not consider popular vote as a deciding factor because that would be more of popularity contest than a “top blogger” indicator.
How could a "top blogger" be anything but a competition or based on popularity? "Top" is a comparative word...it has to be relative to something; what's more, it is subjective. So, I again agree with you that what or who constitutes a top blogger is up to the individual. However, if trying to determine who is considered the "top blogger" from a collective perspective, how else is that to be determined if not by popular vote (that being, "majority rules")? I guess because we live in a democracy where so many things are decided by voting, my mind automatically sees this as the "fairest" way to determine.

That said - I would like to state that I never proposed that a contest be held, nor did I endorse one. Just wanted to be clear on that. Others have suggested it, but I have not, nor have I participated in other contests or games that have been held on the site - at all.

As a side note about the previous attempts to have blog contests, I don't recall them ever being focused on the blogger as it was categories of blogs (best erotica, best rant, funniest, etc...) - which left it open for a bunch of folks to be included in that elite group of "top".

l00kin4myprince

To me a top blog is something that is funny, sad or expresses some type of emotion whether it be happy or sad. Something that everyone can relate to, understand or find down right hilarious!

May 3 @ 1:00AM
SxzeNewMe ~ You may want to go back and read your first comment to this blog. My frequency or consistency comment was in reply to your “A top blogger - in all seriousness - (to me) consists of a variety of things: frequent 0R consistent posts” comment. Now I know the question that was presented as I was the one who posed it. Just not sure you understand it because it appears your comments tend to lean more towards an individual popularity contest rather than criteria that would be indicative of how well a person blogged. In my opinion to be “top” anything means good and not bad. Now the music analogy is interesting and illustrates what I and others have said, “Good is what is good to the individual”. I for one do not care for RAP music as a rule, though there is a few RAP songs that are not bad. On the other hand a lot of people would not like some of the music I like either. It can also be used as an analogy for a popularity contest. How many individuals run out and buy the latest CD by certain artist before they have even heard a single song on it just because the artist is popular. Popular does not always equate to good. As for majority rule, can we say George W. Bush? Not saying that either of his two opponents would have been better but do not know how they could have been worse, sorry Straddle (inside joke between straddle and me). Plus anyone that believes that the majority rules does not know anything about civics in general and things like “super delegates”, Electoral College, Supreme Court decisions, etc. Fairest way to determine, I don’t think so but that is just my opinion and getting off topic. This blog was not about a blog contest.

l00kin4myprince ~ BINGO! Exactly what I have been trying to convey; a top blog or blogger is one that somehow, someway touches the reader. If the reader believes it is “top” then “top” it is.

A better question might be; What makes a person believe that they are a top blogger?

Wordsofwit

May 3 @ 8:21AM
Through the miracle of copy/paste

I will see blogs that I find intriguing enough to begin to read. They could be compelling, interesting, but they are long. They do not get to their point before I lose interest.

I learned a very valuable lesson that served me well in grad school. A professor said, "Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, then tell them again." This is the formula that is used in text books, term papers, and even in business thought leadership writing.

Far too often, I see a blog, usually long that has an interesting title, but meanders and rambles so much without making a point that I blow it off, especially if there are misspelled words. It is okay to to express things like Nacho does in the into. Then launch into the subject and point/subject that you choose to address clearly pointed out.

If I get past the 200 words and I don't know what you are talking about, I will blow it off. Too many people get emotionally engaged and machine gun shit with a complete disregard to communicating.

Perhaps consider two points: One, do it off line in Word to where you can spell check it. Two, let it go for a while. Come back and see how you can make your point with more clarity in a more convincing fashion. A perspective need not be eternal to be immortal. Be succinct, don't ramble.

Nobody wants to do a failed bit. Use due diligence to discover what is popular as you write for the reader, not yourself. If you have online buds that have been here for a while, run your blog ideas by them.

It has changed in the last nine months due to the growth on the site. Last summer, a blog had a shelf life (appearing on the first page) of 24 hours. It is about half of that now. At that time the benchmark for a successful male blog was 100 views, over 10 comments, and three kudos.

One thing you don't want to do is post something today only to discover that it is a rerun as somebody else posted the same thing within the past month. If you have a bud on here that has been keeping up on the blogs, ask them about your topic so you don't post a rerun.

I usually post jokes and surveys through copy/paste. I will comment extensively if I am engaged or amused, but in all honesty that is the exception rather than the rule.

There are various successful formulas you can use. But the essential key is to put forth the subject or idea objectively for the reader followed by the question "What do you think?", before stating what you think or feel. That format opens the subject up for discussion. Reverse that and you can have argument.

One is what I call the concept/question format. Straddlemynose is by far the most successful and popular male blogger on here and he executes the formula excellently. He will objectively put forth a proposition weaving in different perspectives and ask what people think, THEN he states his opinions.

A have a couple of formats I use. One is telling a story and leaving it out there. My last couple of blogs show it. Try to make it interesting. You don't ask any questions in this format. You merely let people react.

Once in a while, I will write an essay. Unless you got "A"s on essays in school, this format is rarely advisable. Very few people can do it well and pull it off. Often the result is a disjointed unorganized ramble that winds up being a long diatribe of disconnected tangents.

Lastly, separate yourself from your blog. Say what, you ask? Write your blog objectively. Then post a comment on your own blog with your own personal sentiments.
swyeter

May 3 @ 10:07AM
CL ~ Thanks for the comment. You found the point I was really trying to make.

UghLee ~ Good point but a question that does not need to be asked. Reading the blogs there is a few on here that are all the time telling us the answer and no one even asked the question. Now that if the ultimate of egotism; reminds me of the joke about the flea climbing up an elephants ass with rape on its mind.

WoW ~ All good points. If only more people would read and heed there might be a lot more interesting things to read in the blogs.

I have received several emails informing me that someone is disparaging me in another blog because I had removed their last comment from this one. For the record that is one of the rights of the blogger; to delete any comments they believe inappropriate, not relevant, off topic or any other reason if or when they believe they have cause to do so. I believed I had cause but took the effort to send them a cordial email explaining why their comments were removed. But for some peculiar reason they preferred to ignore the rationale I provided and instead used another individual’s blog to comment and cast demeaning and degrading accusations towards myself.

I for one have no desire to engage in such childish behavior and I believe, IMHO, if more individuals took responsibility for removing inappropriate comments from their own blogs instead of permitting others to use them as a forum to attempt to inflame others or instigate blog wars then the site administrators would not find it necessary to delete blogs or suspend members.

Who this individual is or what they said as regards to me in the other blog is immaterial but for the record the following is the email that I did send them explaining why I had deleted their comment.

My email reply:
Actually if you had understood the whole intent of the blog, as seen in my comments to others, the blog was not about anything other than what the reader liked. I was attempting to bring you onto that line of thought when I made counter points to criteria. Whatever criteria anyone could devise would be speculative and subjective to the creator of the criteria and its standards. My quality, quantity; number of views, comments or kudos, or some other criteria remark was simply a rhetorical one that served only as red herring and therefore not germane to the subject.

I just want you to know that I deleted your last comment not from any malicious purpose or have the last word but that it was getting too far off topic from my original intent; to hopefully have people realize that if they liked what they read what difference was that to others anyway.

A better question might be; What makes a person believe that they are a top blogger?

Well that would depend on the definition of how Top Blogger was used......but when people take things out of context to just stir the mud.........or stroke their own ego thats an easier definition to define..........shit stirrer egomaniac shall I go on?

In this case top blogger was only referred to as someone who blogged a lot.......

straightup_9 ~ That is one concept or criteria I had not considered. Then again I do love the cowgirls so that would still put a woman on top in my situation.

Like all things written or read one person’s this is the best thing since sliced bread is another person’s this is the worst trash I’ve ever read.
Personal choice and tastes contribute to this a great deal.
Views, kudos and comments are just an outreach of this.
I personally would rather get comments than kudos. I like the feedback and to get that little glimpse into another’s mind their comments allow me.

RR ~ but not saddle, bridle or spurs .

DD ~ Right on, personal tastes are different; some like white bread, some wheat and others rye. That should not mean than one is better or worse than the other but only matter of personal preference.

now the point of popularity.....i've liked blogs by all people...even people i despise can write something that makes me laff or think.....it's about the BLOG NOT the writer...again just me.....

I try to make points to the community which is difficult here. Because you can't get too specific. But rather than worry about seeing my name in lights, so to speak, I try to write things that are interesting to me and I think might be fun or informative for others. Also its good to make people think and use your writing for that rather than some lame "me" thing. Which is why I liked this blog and give one of my few green thingys for your effort and thought.

ynot ~ you have hit what I thought most would see as the core of the matter. I too do not believe it the individual because even the best writer can “bomb” on occasion. To me also it is all about the blog and not the blogger; quality over quantity, substance over subject, content not context, presentation not presenter, etc. And I take it that now I can also say that me being a fuckup is not necessarily a bad thing.

greatsax ~ I agree. Like I said I do not actually "write" a lot of blogs. It is not that I cannot write it is just I am not a typist so I hate to type. So most of my posts are jokes or cut & paste info that I think funny or useful to share; it’s easy and requires little typing. But you are right and I am the same, when something hits me I will write just as I wrote this particular one. When I saw the comment in other blogs and it made me think; what bloggers did I like. I realized it had nothing to do with the individual, the volume they spewed out, any self promoting, number of views or kudos their postings received, etc. It was the topic and the way it was presented. Like ynot related, if I liked it then, to me, it was good even if my worst enemy wrote it but if it was bad then it was bad I don’t care if my mother, brother or lover wrote it. And that was what I was trying to relate but a few seemed to believe it is more about the individual writer. But I believe those all came from egotistical writers and not readers. Some people do write well and I do enjoy MOST of their material but I have never seen any writer that I like ALL of their material. Name does not always equate to good all the time. As example, I have the entire Stephen King collection, why; I like the way his sick mind works and that is why I read his material but every now and then I buy his new book and after reading it think, “Why did I waste my money and time buying and reading this” because I did not like it.
