I see so many young kids having their own cell phones, some as young as 11, or even a little younger than that. I think this is nuts to be honest with you. I honestly believe a kid should have their own cell phone beginning at the age of 16, and as long as they have the money every month to pay for it. It's about responsibility in my opinion. Call me a little old fashion, but that's how I feel. It seems like everything is handed to kids more and more today without any work habit and responsibilty. What's your opinions on this?

Zena, I still remember where you stand on this issue. lol

Mine are 12, 14 but it works out good for me with unlimited text. They respect the rules, never go over the voice limit and always, always respond to my contact. It's freaking expensive though.

Yep! I'm gonna have to tease her about that next time I see her. She used to love that show.

I don't watch it..but I do watch Fox and Friends in the morning....and they were talking to a blonde, I think the name was Megan..I might be wrong, but she was the one who got booted last night. Guess she's a Carly Simon fan.

My nephew who is 7 has one. I think it's ridiculous....he lives on a farm for fuck sakes....who's he gonna call with it, the cows??

I agree to make them wait till they are old enough to pay their own bill. The pay as you go phones are a Godsend for a kids 1st phone!

ooohhhh i'm so having an issue with this right now. i have custody of stepchildren, and their mother bought... BOTH of them cell phones so she could talk to them whenever she wants...

right fine , whatever.

the boy is 10 and the girl is 11. The girl broke hers 2 times, mom replaced it both times. Yeah, way to show her responsibility. I check it to see what she's doing.. she sent text messages all day yesterday while doing her homework. I'd love to see those grades. Today, she walks in from school and goes straight to the phone and starts texting. I yelled... yes sir. I walk in to where she's doing homework.. texting. I took it away, and sure enough will be in trouble by mega bitch just wait and see.

Well, when you have, what is it now, over 500? blogs, you'r bound to start repeating yourself....

Personally, I didn't get a cell phone until I was almost 19 (when I got it myself after I moved out)....my parents would never get me one and when I tried to buy my own while I was living there, they fought me about it, saying I was wasting my (MY!) money. Kinda stunted my social life in high school

So I would say, once they get in high school they're old enough.

My daughter had a cell phone..But the rule was is was not to be for fun..If she went to a football game she took it with incase she needed to call me..The only reason she had one was because I got a new one and gave her my old one. Now it is broke..She says she didn't drop it..Yeah right..Now she is not getting a new one..But I want one.. My daughter is 13 now..She also lost her MP3 player and thinks mom is buying her a new one..Not!!!!!

works odd hours waitressing

I do too. I feel like Alice somedays...

I was a little older myself when I got mine...I think I was 59.....

Back in the stone age we had party lines, operators (number please?) and identifying rings so you'd know by... say, two longs and a short it was for you. But then again, two shorts was your neighbor and most everyone "listened in" at one time or another.

The REAL stone age though was the crank phones...turn the crank and you got...number please? I remember those too....welllllllll hell....what CAN I say???

I would say those are fine for young kids. otherwise if its something they want then I'd say when they can pay for the bill themselves, they should get one. Damn I sound old

If they are old enough to learn the alphabet....give em a phone!!!! That's my stand...my God it didn't kill us to not have one as kids...we could barely get our parents to let us use theirs. But now...peer pressure. You know the damage that can cause!!! I can just see it ....picture this...Mom walking her kid in a stroller with her three year old waving her new picture phone at the kid in the passing stroller with the little cute pink phone...that does nothing. I am telling you...peer pressure can be devastating ...

LOL, yes my daughter has one and she is 11, she has had hers for a few years now. I have never had a problem with her using it, she doesn't abuse it. In a way its a good thing cause the novelty has worn off. She can call me after school to see how close I am to getting her, I think there is a comfort zone in there for me, which brings me peace of mind, although I'm sure others would say......yeah right!! But it works for us, and to be honest its not that more expensive then just having the one.

I got my first one 2 and a half years ago, my fiancee at the time bought it for me and told me now I didn't have any excuses to not call her every day,no matter where I was. I hate technology, and think that usually, it just makes life more stressful and complicated. I don't thing young kids really need cell phones, let 'em wait till they have their own job. Society got by just fine with pay phones and regular phone lines for the last several dozen years without the world ending....kids today can do the same . Wants are not always necessarily needs.

As old as the money the little shit makes to pay for it themselves.

That would fix many problems, including but not limited to:
Shutting the hell up, going outside, and paying for their own crap.

Good thing I ain't got kids, they are lucky they passed those damned Child Labor laws.

Uhhhhhhhh.........oh well.

If the kid is old enough to punch buttons and want one, they are old enough to go do part-time work like the rest of us did back in the day to pay their own way.

I think it depends on the child..my daughter (who doesn't own one) is only 10 but is very good about earning money by doing extra chores around the house I would have no problems giving her one as she is very responsible with her money & I know she would only use it to call her aunt & nana. Tease.
