One of the things we adults are supposed to look for when we exchange messages and email with each other is spelling. Spelling is a clue that we are expected to use to help us devine the person we are communicating with. Apparently poor spellers are more likely to be underage children than the adults they claim to be but we are the ones that can get into trouble. I'm not talking about the occassional misspelled word or a transposed letter or two but entire sentences and paragraphs of letters intended to represent words and ideas but which are lazily thrown onto the screen.

Eg: ths my new addy u only hav this addy send emai this addy we can tawk

I actually got that from someone who says she is a 45 year old woman, I've talked to her on the phone and she sounds like a 45 year old woman, in fact she sounds quite articulate like an entirely different person from the one that sent me the emails.
Ten years ago when I was new to the internet I had the misfortune of exchanging messages with a woman I met in a yeehaw chat room claiming to be a 24 year old . She turned out to be 14 [and I found out before anything bad happened ] so I am probably more leery than most about this.

But honestly, what does it say about an adult (allegedly) that is so illiterate or worse just too lazy to spell correctly. In my opinion it's even rude, I mean it's damn hard to read that crap.

Yes I have to agree with this.....it's annoying as hell to try and break some kind of code that apparently only 14 year olds know.

I have to admit I use this code sometimes..but only when I am texting on my phone..makes it easier when sending them especially to my kids...they can send me 4 texts to my 1....

Sometimes I deliberately make spelling errors in my forum posts/blogs. But when I send an email to someone I make sure all my spelling is correct. It's a total turn off for me to receive an email from a guy with obvious spelling mistakes in it. Or to receive an email in ALL CAPS...I mean, come on! If you don't look good in email, I'm not giving you the time of day!

To clarify? is your blog about poor spelling? Or about the abbreviations used when emailing?

I know a few adults who are very poor spellers and honestly I used to think that it was a reflection of their education? But then I learned that sometimes it's also the fact that they can't type and don't check what they have typed before they hit "send". And yes, sometimes it's poor spelling as well.

Have you ever noticed the spelling on television these days? Last nite when I was in bed sort of drifting between "asleep" and "almost conscious" I saw the pre-lim for a movie station that had "F'n" in it.

In fact I don't even think the "F" was capitalized.

How are kids supposed to learn if the television is putting this junk out there? Or not using correct grammar or punctuation?

Great blog.. Thanks

Drives me crazy, I think it's fine IN text messages, not in emails. It seems lazy to me to be honest.

I echo Candace in that if I get an email from someone who is a habitual bad speller and doesn't take the time to go back and fix things - I tend to ignore.

You can read someone and identify their mistakes vs ignorance and laziness.

Diana West makes a very good point in her book, The Death of the Grown Up, that there is a cascading effect where modern Americans are rebelling against authority to the point where they forsake personal responsibility.

I proudly proclaim that I am an Anarchist, but people often mistake Anarchy for the same thing, believing that Anarchy means that you are acting in a fashion that is without responsibility and practically random.

The truth is that it is an ideal (not necessarily a practice) that is based on the fact that the government that governs least governs best. But the catch is that in order to have that sort of government you have to take on greater personal responsibility.

In other words, you want things to be better (including everything from spelling to health care and crime) then you have to make them so yourself.

I try to use the abbreviated versions when I'm actually text messaging from a cell phone. It makes sense there. Not everyone has unlimited text messaging, so I'll do it as a courtesy unless I'm made aware that it's okay to "spell it out."

One fellow that used to type in im's would repeatedly leave out connective words between "I" and the rest of his sentence. I horny, I going now. At first, I thought... typos, then later laziness, until a friend of mine told me he actually talks like that. She said it was a southern thang.

omg.. Is it not the most irritating thing? More than idiots who park in handicapped spaces, jump out and jog across the parking lot to get to a good sale? I just went through my mail to find one that I just opened.. darn if I didnt block the guy, which I guess means the email he sent went along with it.. I was going to copy it into this comment. It took me a few good minutes to actually read it.. Comprehend it.. that's a whole different story.
If after reading my profile, why? What on God's green earth jumps out and says "PLEASE, send me illegible, mumblings from a complete idiot? Does my profile look & read like I live in the redneck central, in a single wide with a bunch of rust cars, a few hundred dogs and cats, and a couple million filthy kids running around? I know, I know.. I sound rather "bitchy".. lol.. seriously, just a pet peeve.. Isnt that what spell check is for? How impressive it is to get an email that says..
"cum on babe, cn wee b lovrs 4 reel. I wanna fuck yu so bad" Yeah, let me call you right now..
I do get why they dont get the impression from my profile that an education might be key.. just maybe.. they can't read..?? again.. I know.. bitchy..

Thank you Thenewguy. A person who misspells, uses no punctuation, or can't complete a sentence is a total turn off.

People who do this, come off sloppy, lazy, illiterate, and un-sexy.

Kids have no business whatsoever on this site.

I have to agree with you. Six years ago when I was introduced to chat, my now husband and I chatted every night of the week for hours..... but now I am wondering if it would have lasted for hours, if we hadn't of taken the time to use correct english, puncuation, and capitalization???

I try my best. I don't proof read my comments, blogs or emails. If I make a spelling error I just hope it's forgiven and the true meaning understood.

By the way you misspelled "define".

AMEN!!! Unfortunately, its that kind of laziness that had the government trying to have "Ebonics" (The language spoken in the inner city by kids who never attend school) taught in the school systems as a second language, because these inner city kids, are going to have a hard time communicating with people in the work force. When I head about this, I was thinking to myself very loudly "THATS JUST FUCKED UP RIGHT THERE!!!

um..PP,, I thought he meant "divine" as in to predict ...LOL. At any rate, "Devine" isn't a word,,, maybe it is a porn star name.

Spellings and misspellings do help form impressions of other ppl..And is usually an indication of intelligence. For me intelligence and creativity are important traits. A poor speller might get a break if they prove themselves worthy in the creativity sense... I would allow that some of the lousy spelling above deserves that break...

No, I misspelled divine which is a different word. I was using it much like the term 'divining rod', that you use to discover something.

Probably another good reason not to type up blogs when I'm getting ready to rush to work.
